Make sure you buy cavity-back irons and not blades until you get to single-digit handicap - worth knowing the difference.

Titleist Pro V1 balle are slightly softer which means you might lose 10 yards on the fairway but this is more than made up with the superior "feel" with short irons and putter.

Pro v1's now your talking, plastic reusable tee's get my blood racing, i also like to get in the hole 1st or 2nd time third time is just so frustrating, don't be scared to put it in firmly and make sure you hit the sweet spot or you will never be happy.

Go to American Golf Discount they have some pre owned cliubs from £99. When you go in the shop they are on the LHS, furthest away from the door. The Titleist clubs looked a good buy.

The Problem with this is, i essentially have no budget at present so could quite easily spend £300-500 easily no doubt i could be talked into it.

if i get a set i no some of it will be cheap and a bit shit, but i can replace clubs i dont use or like the feel of as i go on.

by the sounds of it a beginners budget should be under £200. iv already brought some great golf shoes! very comfey.

Any good sites for clothing? off to bournemouth for a golf weekend, been told i need to get some Poulter type CHINOS.

one question, do ball make much of a difference?

Spend as much as you can afford, at a reputable place. If you go to a pro at a golf club the likelehood is you'll pay more for whatever he/she's selling. American Golf is good value, and all the staff are enthusiasts.

A pair of Poulter type troosers will cost you as much as a half decent driver.

Balls do make a difference, to a degree. With a decent ball, assuming you are making good contact regularly, you'll notice better distance on your drives, and you'll notice consistant accuracy too. The ball manufacturers go to a lot of trouble to ensure their best balls are perfect, always matched. You'll never see a pro, a semi pro or even a mid handicap player rummaging around in his bag and grabbing any old ball to hit. Choose a brand, and a type, and try to stick with them for a period of time, then you can be sure whether the ball is to blame for your slice/lack of distance/lack of check on the green.
