What does Nsc think of Nikolaos Michaloliakos and his golden dawn party, apparently they're gaining some momentum and he has been likened to a certain former German chancellor

Will Kurt Russell be there? At this party?

Will I need to bring my own booze?

Golden Dawn was the name of the Supertanker around which the most excellent book by Wilbur Smith "Hungry As The Sea" was based.

Carry on.

Neo Nazi thugs. Will definitely get more popular as the squeeze increases on Greece. Theyre already blaming the immigrants for everything and burning down ethnics houses.

On the plus side. The Greeks cant even sort out a decent plumbing and electrical system let alone organise a super efficient killing machine like the Nazis did.

Their massed rally would be a load of fat hairy blokes sitting around on white plastic garden chairs drinking grappa and shouting at each other.

What is worrying is a more general lurch to the extreme right as austerity squeezes the pips.

Nutjobs they may be, but nutjobs that want to "liberate" Istanbul from the deadly enemy!

With the way things are going at the moment in the middle east, the last thing the US or it's allies want is a Greek neo-nazi group sabre rattling at Turkey and other Muslim countries in the Middle East. It really would be a massive catastrophe for the world if Michaloliakos took over.

Might see Greece in civil war - would be ironic as the EU was supposedly created to stop european wars and now might be the fuse that starts one!.

I believe they 'only' won about 7 percent of the vote at the last Election, and as others have said,in difficult times , voters vote differently.

With the latest budget now passed, meaning more cuts and more job losses, Greece and the Greeks are in for a hard time. 25percent unemployment, huge tax rises, and changes to pensions.

They should never have joined the Euro.

If I remember correctly the Nazi party won a very small percentage of votes the first time round and five years later Hitler was chancellor.

Read a disturbing article about them the other week. There is much to be worried about. Putting Greek people first is one thing, beating up foreigners and stripping women to publicly humiliate them, all within 2ft of police officers (60% of police are believed to be supporters) is quite another, as is the police giving GD thugs access to interrogation rooms where foreigners are being questioned. A very worrying subject indeed.

It's the power and support they have outside of the government that is the most worrying aspect.

Up to 14% in polls now I'm afraid. Shocking

Golden Dawn is a very worrying phenomenon but unles the world has changed alarmingly they are more a focus of disgruntlement and this will not transfer into winning votes at the polls. This may change however if Greece comes out of the EU. Then anything can happen.

Altho there are strong nationalist tendencies in Greece there is also a very strong socialist tradition. They have some of the strongest trade unions in Europe... so Civil War is possibly more likely than a new rise of naziesque government.

The whole constantinople not istanbul thing tends to be bravado and midnight after ten bottles type talk. Not even the Golden Dawn thinks its realistic.

I don't believe the bubbles could get their shit together enough to rise to power like Nazis but what Golden Dawn are doing already is disturbing enough and needs to be halted.
