I know I’m on your ignore list but I had an umbilical hernia operation back in March, the GP referred me and in 5 weeks had the operation.

Well, my experience was that I had a double inguinal hernia and got through to see a consultant but because at the time I was on steroids for another condition I had to ween myself off the steroids over an 18 month period before they would consider me for surgery. I therefore swapped drugs and went back 24 months later (by the time I got another appointment) and got put on the list. I was told it would be another 18 months on a waiting list. I was lucky that family took pity on me and paid for it to be done at the British Hernia Centre at St Mary’s London where they did the operation in a morning and I was home by 4.00 pm.
The biggest problem was the London consultant told me that being on steroids would have made no difference to him operating - just a minimal extra chance of infection that any surgeon worth his/her salt can mitigate against.

If the NHS was properly funded they’d have better admin....but you have to pay for it. Germany has a first class health system, truly first class and the country is dripping with doctors surgeries and dentists. You cannot go one block without finding one where I live. But the public pay 7% of their salary with employers paying another 7% for this. But, it’s for life and whatever care you need, including care homes, is taken care of.

Put simply, the NHS is shockingly underfunded. Sure there can be savings due to efficiencies but the bottom line is it’s needs far more cash if you want a decent first class service.

Work colleagues in Bavaria. They are not so complimentary about the German health provision. Always complaining about costs ....

The other day I'd had a my quarterly "check" and the consultant suggested that a new scan may be in order as it had been some time since my last. I went to the scan area at the hospital to book a scan, nothing for about three to four week or longer at the time I wanted either early morning or late afternoon. I then said, "don't suppose you've got anything now", the guy checked and then said, yes we've have time now, WTF! In I went using valuable lost time, but my point is surely this should be the first place to look not when prompted!!

Better than complaining about the crap service I guess. I should have mentioned the 14% is capped; if you’re a high earner you can opt out and take private health care because it will be cheaper.

Also true, but I'm not sure the crap admin is purely down to lack of funding..............despite the seemingly enormous number of 'managers' employed, the organisation appears chaotic.

I've had exactly the opposite. I went to my GP in April (same day appt) was referred to the County, saw the consultant in June, who referred me to a more specialised consultant and was sent an appt for October. I rang to say I couldn't make the October appt, so they asked me if I would take a cancellation.
I did & saw that doctor at the end of August. I went on the waiting list for surgery. Tuesday, this week, I received a phone call offering me a cancellation for the surgery, which is now next Monday. I had my pre-op today.
Excellent service imo. Well done the NHS.

Btw millions of ££££ are lost by people not bothering to turn up for their appts.

I too was lucky. Went on line at 7.30 and got an appointment by 8.30 same day. Hospital referral 15 working days later. I think I was just lucky. But on the strength of that experience it was a Rolls Royce service - especially as our GPs surgery has been massively upgraded.

I've found it sad in the last couple of years how my GP is clearly under time pressure and therefore stressed and needs to move clients on as soon as possible.

I would be prepared to pay 7%. As health care in Germany is compulsory I already do.
