do the tourist things, and you will enjoy the island, do the elephant safari's, go and see the waterfalls, and do the island tour.

Grandfather / grandmother rocks

the mummified monk, and if you can go to Nathon go and experience how quiet it is on that side of the island compared to the very busy Chaweng. Also Bo Phut is worth a visit, to see the temple and the giant golden Buddah, you can't miss it, as you will see it when you come in to land. The airport is something else, more like a straw hut.

Lovely island, but starting to get very commercial...

Please take this advice and really think about it as it'll give you the most out of your time in the Gulf.
  • Take a 1 or ideally 2 day boat trip around Koh Ang Thong National Marine Park. This is where 'The Beach' is written about and based. You can camp on a couple of the islands which is amazing.
  • Take 2 days/nights and get the boat over to Koh Tao. This island is much more of a travelers island rather than a mass commercial center.
  • Spend the night on Koh Phangan and go to a beach party. The beach parties are better away from full moon.
  • If you have a spare 3 days, get to the mainland and get to the floating bungalows at Khao Sok National Park.

All of the above are very close to Samui and very easy and cheap to get to.
My final advice is to spend as little time on Samui as possible.

Have you been to Khao Sok?! I stayed on the floating bungalows there - amazing!

Didn't stay very long in Koh Samui but echo the statements about Koh Phangnan beach parties. Had the best time of my life on that island. Try to get to Guy's Bar if you get the chance, you have to get the longboat onto a secluded beach and the climb the stairs high up into the treetops and rave the night away!

Whilst I have absolutley no idea where it is, by the sounds of the name of it you should wear a condom for the whole of your holiday.

Might be going in about 6 weeks so appreciate any other advise. 29 year old and probably going alone. 3 weeks roughly but few days in Bangkok chuncked out of that. Rest looking to chill on a beach in sun, do some watersports (the 'normal' kind not Danny Seagull type) and see a few sites. Mixed bag really cheers

Reggae bar is good in Cheweng Beach.. Lovely Island and Lovely people..

Had a massive fight at the Reggae Bar in the late 90's. Mate ended up with a fractured skull and spinal damage and sans a gonad, half his fault because of a bit of lip to the locals, but massive over-reaction and the locals pulled knives and guns. Don't want to piss on anyones chips but even back then Ko Samui was going downhill fast and today I would rather stick my head in a bucket of cold porridge than go back there. There are hundreds of better beaches, hundreds of better tourist sites in Thailand if you are really into budha etc. I was there in the rainy season and the beach was rough, churned up and shit. Went for a walk one morning and found a dead tourist on the beach. Place was full of hookers and pissed up Brits, I thought I was back in Ibiza with all the Macca's and KFC, Pizza crap etc.

Chaweng is a horrible place IMHO but no doubt there are a few nice resorts around and you will probably enjoy yourself.

Best place in Thailand for me has always been Railay Beach near Krabi.

Have fun.

Don't try and smuggle heroin in your suitcase, as they will kill you.

Then the British Embassy will plead for leniency, resulting in a mere 40 year prison sentence, sharing a cell with 20 angry Thai gangsters.

And have a good feel for any extra baggage downstairs before you go using those condoms

I loved Koh Samui though I haven't been for the best part of ten years - just remember when you fancy a quickie that she is almost certainly a he, and don't buy watches or clothes expecting them to last

Oh yeah......look out for tree snakes - I had one try to visit the beach barbecue and it wasn't the eating sort
