So why did Poyet try to swap Hoskins for Murray twelve months after letting him go?

Because he realised he made a ricket and had realised that he'd bought a pup (Labrador one) in CMS?

Sorted.

The closest we'll get to me returning my season ticket.

3 players doing an identical job while Baldock probably gets slung out on a wing.

It's as if last season didn't actually happen.

Brighton all over. Probably the best club in the entire football league at shooting itself in the foot. When Murray then left, then how many others on here saw this coming? More importantly, why didnt the supposed "footballing people" at the Albion not see that Murray was head shoulders better than CMS ? Also a more under achieving club compared to the size of its support and potential you will not find in the country than our own BHA. One day however, just one day, we might just get it right. I wont hold my breath though.

And where were those who claim it was a mistake to let him go when Murray was poor in his 1st season at Palace?

No one ready seemed to think it was a big mistake then. (Bolaise and Zaha were probably the reason for their promotion rather than just Murray and we would have had them here had we kept them so there is no way to know if we would have done well with Murray still here instead of joining Palace)

Please can we look to the future and stop dwelling in the past when there is sweet fa that can be done about it now - it's really rather dull and monotonous.

Because when it comes to signings, Poyet was lazy and picked people who he knew. Not necessarily a bad trait - a little bit Micky Adams like, except he mainly specialised on players who had looked good against us. Noone, Harley, Hoskins, Mackail-Smith to name a few. He didn't like scouting players (he'd also rather pick people like Billy Paynter who he knew from Swindon), so in this instance went for the target man we knew would actually work for us, even if he struggled with the man management of him.Thankfully this changed eventually and we picked up the likes of Lopez/Ulloa etc - not sure if this was due to the changes behind the scenes and the Stevenson departure? Who knows.

As for people saying 'nobody was complaining at the time Palace wasn't scoring in the Championship' - they were. Everyone knew we needed a target man, everyone knew that Murray was the one who suited our style of player. Quick wingers - Bennett/Noone/LuaLua and later Buckley played with the perfect header of a ball to compliment them. His success since? With Bolasie and Zaha at Selhurst.

Worst decision imaginable by the club - Poyet knew it at the time and I can only imagine Bloom has regretted it ever since. But he won't be coming back now that's for sure, we've missed our chance and will have to do with bargain bucket signings to spearhead our likely relegation battle.

You are absolutely right, most of us fans knew it was an almighty mistake when they did it and in the first season he was at Selhurst. In fact, if anyone who saw CMS play after a few games and hadn't worked it out then I would wonder what they were watching. It was what Brighton do best - shooting itself in the foot and no amount of trying to re write history will alter that. One day the Albion will get the playing side right I hope.

If you're looking to put down Poyet, there's plenty of ammunition there, but I think your analysis is a bit harsh.

Greer, Barnes, Buckley, Bridcutt weren't signed due to a lack of scouting by 'lazy' Poyet, and three of them have since played Premier League football.

Poyet's masterplan was for CMS to be a mini-Messi, putting away the chances created by Lua Lua, Buckley and Noone in the six yard box on the deck, with Hoskins as the second striker.

It didn't work, with the benefit of hindsight we can all see that CMS's failings meant that he wasn't really up to this division, but when he signed for us instead of West Ham there were no people complaining.

Due to something connected with the day job I bumped into Kevin Ball, who was the caretaker manager at Sunderland when Di Canio was sacked. His comments about Poyet were very uncomplimentary.

Leaving aside the obvious uncontrolled laughter that the two players can be mentioned in the same sentence, then if the club wanted someone who had great ball control and could convert chances in the box then they had it with Murray. All CMS could do was run around. His ball control and finishing were not in the same class as Murray (never mind Messi). Anyone who saw both players play for even the briefest period should have been able to work that out. The fans did, just typical Brighton that we had "footballing people" who couldnt judge a player in a month of sundays.

As always WCP, you and I are in complete agreement.

Murray was and is a class act.

I don't disagree with what you're saying about the Poyet failed masterplan, but he gave up on that after about 3 months and the worst bit of transfer business in the clubs history.

I do think he was relatively lazy when it came to signings though. Poyet admitted himself they discovered Buckley when watching Watford in the cup. Bridcutt was recommended to the scouting team at the time and was signed after a trial. Fair points about Barnes and Greer, but there's other examples - Ankergren (worked with Gus at Leeds), Vincelot (played well for Dagenham against us), Dobbie (played well against us for Blackpool), and Hammond (played well for Saints).

I do think Gus was mainly good for us and rightly should be remembered for some unbelievable football and players we had in his era, but the Murray cock up, Palace performance and subsequent departure were absolutely unacceptable and he is as accountable as Bloom for it.

Greer was at Swindon when Gus was assistant manager, & we signed Barnes on loan, after he ran us ragged at Plymouth away, even though we won the match.

I do think he is as accountable as Bloom for it.

The manner of his departure was immature, unprofessional and unstatesmanlike.

But when he started we were fourth bottom of League 1, and when he left we were fourth in the Championship.

The arguments in relation to the Palace match don't hold up to deeper scrutiny.

Poyet was on a £500k bonus for getting us promoted, and the squad as a whole would have picked up a further £4 million.

It was in his interests for us to go up. He could have left in the summer with an enhanced reputation and more money in his pocket.

The players froze at home to Palace, there's no conspiracy.

I'm not saying he did it deliberately - but his tactics were wrong in the home leg, he DID spend the whole game sat on his arse even when we were losing, and then there's the whole Vicente "I was fit" thing...very strange.

The players froze also though, no doubt about it.

The Vicente thing was very strange, agree with you totally. But he never played another game in his career.

Most gifted player I've ever seen in an Albion shirt in over 40 years, but mad as a can of bees.
