[TV] Gladiators

Watched a couple of episodes and it's harmless enough. Quite like the actual games, but not a fan of the Walshes or Mark 'Poundland John Anderson' Clattenberg, whose accent seems to go all over the place during the course of the show.

I really like it as a show and it's great to see how my 9-year-old loves it too, but Clattenberg is dreadful. He's got absolutely no charisma when he does his little interviews and seems to be a low quality photo-copy of the 90s ref.

The Gladiators themselves seem fun too. A good mix of nice and comedy panto bad guys.

I think you might be taking him a bit too seriously, he’s “the wind up merchant” character, quite clearly he’s casted to take the piss a bit.
Just the same as viper has been cast as the “nasty bad guy” of the show.

I agree with this entirely. It is just an act. The fact he can deliver the lines he does without cracking up is brilliant. Nitro is my favourite bloke gladiator as he seems a really nice bloke. He had a good line on one of the games when a contender tried to out sprint him and he said “my day job is Olympic sprinter” (seems a top bloke on fighting talk too). Fantastic family entertainment.

This series has the same issue that all the old series also had. It is much harder for the blokes. Dual for example the contenders are not that much smaller than the gladiators for the women whereas you put Giant vs a contender and they don’t look like they are same species.

My kids are 15, 13 and 13. It is the only time we all sit down and watch much tv together. Gladiators and then Michael Mac. Fun family entertainment.

We've all known at least one bloke in our lives who thinks he's God's gift and he just takes that and whacks it up to 11. Hilarious and he seems to really enjoy it too.

Ha ha. Yeh. Academy Awards should be on the way. Legend for playing that role straight and Viper, just for the facial expressions.

Legend properly reminds me of one of my twat mates who I went drinking with. Loved himself way too much, but it got him the girls no problem!

It's just fantastic. My kids and 6 and 3 and they absolutely lose their minds from about 2pm on Saturday knowing it's "Pizza and Gladiators night". It's the one time we all sit down and watch something together as standard and the kids will pause the TV to ensure everyone is sat down to see every second of the opening credits.

TV has it's HUGE downsides and we have desperately tried to stop the kids being screen obsessed (no tablets, no phones being used by grown ups at family time,, limited tv time etc) but that moment of all sitting down together and enjoying a show equally is just fantastic.

It's just brilliant TV. And you know what makes it better? The Gladiators are PROPERLY going for it. Some of the rugby/NFL tackles from Apollo are phenomenal.

The kids set up their own gauntlet in the sitting room which soon had to be halted when the 6 year old (holding sofa cushions as pads) launched the 3 year old inches away from the TV unit.





As a note, I'm still giggling to myself that someone on this thread took Legend seriously. NEVER go to a panto.

I think of watching Gladiators as a free pantomine every Saturday night. The kids get to boo a villain, get a few positive messages about personal health and fitness and I get to perv over a few scantily clad 20 somethings.

I really don't understand why anyone would have a strong objection.

Perfect post about it. It does exactly what it needs to. My kids are older and more cynical but it is great.

it is superb saturday evening tv. My son is always going on about how much of a "baddie" Viper is. Most of the kids in his class watch it as well

It's such simple entertainment, it's mad that it's been off our screens for such a long time

and yes, Sabre is very much "one for the dads"

Sky did a reboot about a decade ago minus the racist original gladiator names but it never took off. It's perfect primetime Saturday night family viewing.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators, on Netflix, is worth a watch.

Not with kids, mind.

Totally agree about Legend, how he plays it straight sometimes I don't know. I enjoy the fitness and family stuff he puts out on social media as himself. He's very charismatic, his oldest son Luca is absolutely brilliant.

This series has been great fun, I'm glad they went back to the original format and look of the show. The 2008 Sky reboot changed to much and it lost that good family fun feeling the original and this series have.
