Well I'd have him back here (if Oscar didn't want the job), never going to happen though. Quite shocked by the amount of grief Poyet gets on here, but then again I wasn't fussed when he linked himself to what ever job and was only interested in what went on during the games

Evidently. I also feel that given Gus' behaviour in the period that followed Barber's arrival Bloom was eventually left little option. However, if Gus had been backed rather than Barber when the problems started it would have been very very different. Gus became pretty unmanageable post Barber's arrival when his project was taken away from him. The whole feel of this club is incredibly different to how it was pre Barber; it is a different club entirely in my opinion and certainly not for the better.

Whilst Gus was/is egotistical that is not unusual in managers and some might say it's an integral part of being a successful manager, it certainly isn't unusual. The same doesn't work for CEO's but......

Yes, I agree with you about the feel around the Amex stadium although funnily enough not about the club as a whole. You know we've been through many trials and tribulations over the years and this just seems like a downslide on the roller coaster. I know for a while we seemed so close to the Premier League but over the decades the club has had many shades of blue with only the occasional purple patch!

When we moved to the Amex we were very much on the upslope but (easy with hindsight) it was a disaster waiting to happen. The twin problems of uncontrolled spending and Gus's growing ego hurtling towards one another were bound to end in a car crash. I'm not knocking Gus, I loved what he did for us before the smash but if it was a straight choice for TB between his volatile manager or financial probity then surely it was a no-brainer?

All I want from a manager is to be totally committed to my club. That doesn't mean holding clandestine meetings with a rival club, in the same division, whilst the season is approaching its critical phase. That doesn't mean giving said club every indication that you would be prepared to leave your current position and join them. That doesn't mean returning to your current employer and revealing the offer on the table from the rival and indicating that an improvement in terms was now expected.
Whatever Gus achieved at our club, those actions were unforgiveable.

You won't find any manager totally committed to one club, ever. Some keep quiet about their ambitions, others are honest. Football is a dog eat dog industry & realistically, the only loyal ones are the fans.

Must admit it's good that we don't have to have all that tedium anymore.

The facts are....he was in talks with Reading. They were so convinced they were going to land him, they held a meeting and staff and players were told that he was going to be the next manager. Gus returned to BHA and made the board aware of the offer on the table. Reading got wind of his antics and pulled the plug on the deal.

You do well, you get linked to bigger jobs. You don't do well, you won't. Know which one I'd rather have.

I never found Gus' comments about Chelsea/Spurs/Leeds to be an issue. Thought fans that got upset about that were a bit too sensitive. The whole telling Bloom he wanted to leave a couple of months before the end of the season was more of a problem though.

But unfortunately he started to become distracted with thoughts of other people he could shag, and blew his load early.

As amazing as that title winning season was, I don't think Gus would ever have succeeded in getting us to the Premier League after the Palace Play-off shambles. He was done here, either way.

Whether he'd stand a better chance now Burke has gone and the Manager seems to have more control over the people the club try to sign, is another matter.

It was an exciting era for all kinds of reasons and it lasted longer than I thought it would.

My view of Gus, during that time, was "good and improving manager, not a very pleasant person". Now I think I may have got that half right. His style of football is sometimes effective but really requires some very talented players to make it work as he would like - players that Brighton and Sunderland don't have in sufficient numbers, I'd suspect.

I'm waiting for the book. I'd like to know what really went on. That TB's said nothing is par for the course, that Gus hasn't, flies in the face of being Gus (if he was right).True he got us where we should be, but he is his own worse enemy in that he believes he is beyond reproach. Everything that goes wrong is somebody else's fault, but winning was down to HIM.
I have a problem with disloyalty, and I think in those last few months he let us down, by covertly seeking other jobs whilst being our manager. I also don't believe he gets much credit for unsettling Bridcutt or Buckley to the point he turned them against completing their contracts....anyway time will tell.

You have a very idealistic view of the world, & you'll always be disappointed. Every managerial position ends in tears, usually within 18 months.

We would never know as the squad wouldn't have been decimated both summers because Gus would've been in charge of the retained list and not Burke. That's been the main reason we've got worse each season, not having a manager in place to say who should stay and who should be let go. Thanks to Burke's ineptitude, as you say, we've been left with dog turd.

Burke was in charge of recruitment regardless as far as I understand. Big error by Bloom giving him that much of a say, he was definitely correct to sack him (Burke I mean) just hope it isn't too late in terms of this season.
