Ha ha ha!! I enjoyed all of your entries. I've known and loved quite a few for decades. However, after listening to each of them, I thought I'd set aside the overfamiliar and lay the crown of laurels upon the brow of a member who'd submitted a song I'd never heard before, with a tune I could hum to and odd lyrics to make me chuckle. @OzMike , I pass the torch to you!

As a parting gift, I am also sharing a music video from my neck of the woods which seems to share a passing aesthetic resemblance and sense of humour to The Divine Comedy's National Express.

The song ends rather earnestly with the following lyrics:

Je veux goûter aux avantages de son savoir faire -- I want to taste the benefits of her expertise
Je veux la moitié que l'on garde pour le déssert -- I want the half she keeps for dessert
J'aime, j'aime ta grand-mère -- I'm in love, in love with your grandmother
Je veux que ma première soit sa dernière -- I want my first time to be her last time
J'aime, j'aime ta grand-mère -- I'm in love, in love with your grandmother
Je veux faire à ton père plein de demi frères -- I want to make half-brothers for your father
Je dirais... J'aime, j'aime ta grand-mère -- I'd say... I'm in love, in love with your grandmother
Je voudrais que ta mère soit notre bouquetière -- And I'd like your mother to be our florist

Ok, thanks.
Right, give me a song that in you opinion was the best one hit wonder.
Does it have to be a true one hit wonder? I.e. An act with one number one single and then nothing else ever in the top 40.

Great song idea.

So many to choose from. Tried to avoid the obvious

Although Money was retrospectively issued as a single and you could argue that Learning to Fly is by a different incarnation, as was See Emily Play , Arnold Layne etc.

The only classic line up of The Floyd done this.

Pink Floyd were not a singles band so, a one hit wonder.

'Not Now John' from the Waters/Gilmour Pink Floyd's following album was released as a single and reached the top 30.

Does that count as a " hit" though.. Surely a "Hit" has to be at least top 10

Also

Rick Wright had been sacked and Nick Mason was a paid employee of the band rather than a partner, it was basically a RW solo album with Gilmour on guitars.

I've not seen a definition of a One Hit Wonder that drills down to consider the line up of the band. The England World Cup Squad got to Number One with 'Back Home' in 1970 and Number Two in 1982 with 'This Time'. The line up was entirely different, but they are both listed under the same heading in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. In that book, under Pink Floyd, there are nine charting singles, seven of which made the top 40 (the usual definition of a hit) and two of which made the top ten. 'Another Brick In The Wall' is not usually considered a One Hit Wonder.

Some define a One Hit Wonder as an act that had only one top 40 hit, some as an act that had only one single chart entry, some as an act that had one number one and no other top 40 entry and some as an act that had one number one and no other chart entry at all. It's not straightforward. This is why I asked @OzMike for his definition. Considering he is is 'Oz' Mike, it may also be presumptious to assume that we are talking about the UK chart, not an international one. I'm sorry to be so pedantic, but as someone who has cherished copies of 'Clean Clean' by The Buggles, 'News At Ten' and 'Jimmie Jones' by The Vapors, 'She Goes To Finos' by the Toy Dolls and 'The Miracle of The Age' by Doctor & the Medics, I have quite a fondness for the less successful siblings.

So hard, this category.

This is the only hit single by van der graaf generator. It got to NUMBER ONE (in Italy).

But it was also the theme music to the late night rock programme on radio 1 in the early 70s.

A bonus point if you can name who wrote it (no cheating, now!).

I just knew we would end up debating what constitutes a one hit wonder. Certainly they need one hit (which means top five in the UK or number one somewhere else). But what about other 'hits'? Peter Sarsted had a second top 20 hit. As did Mungo Jerry. What about big Album bands who maybe only ever released on single? I went for a band that didn't generally release singles but did achieve one number one, and this is a record that everyone of a certain generation knows, even if they don't know who recorded it. Obscure, yet familiar.

I always think of this if anyone mentions One Hit Wonder.
