Top of the pop 1980 ignoring the dodgy effects and the obvious miming, they cut the song off before the bloody chorus which is only at the end of the song.

Funny that people are trying to dance to song that is almost impossible to dance too

Some good contributions. I wouldn't have been able to resist piking Nina had it been 'Mississippi Goddam'. Lovely to see Polly Styrene get a mention. She certainly had the kind of spirit I was talking about. However, Harry Wilson's tackle came in with a late winner. I have an old vinyl copy of 'Eli & the Thirteenth Confession', but haven't heard much more of Laura. That song is great and I've stuck some more of her stuff on my wishlist, so thanks. Your go HWT.

Pulp's 'Common People' has a single edit that omits the best and most biting lyrics of the song:

"Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they'll tear your insides out
'Cause everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah and the chip stains and grease
Will come out in the bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
Whilst you can only wonder why"

You can never tell its that version until it reaches that bit and it just skips to the end chorus. Like getting a doughnut with no jam.

Blimey - I've never seen those lyrics written down, and have always thought that line was:

Yeah and the tube station grease
Will come out in the bath

Cheers, pal. OK so today's is:

GIVE ME A SONG THAT STARTS OUT QUITE DULL THEN SUDDENLY MORPHS INTO A THING OF EXTREME BEAUTY HALF WAY THROUGH

For example, this:

You have no idea how thrilled I was to get my suggestion picked. I can't remember who does the judging, the OP or the 'winner'. If it's me I will give my verdict on the new topic tomorrow evening.

Shit, I had better delve into something obscure and ideally electronic I suppose. Smoke me a kipper I may be a while

YOU get to choose the winner

I have failed to find a song that might endear me to Harry’s taste in music but I’m feeling sorry for him that not one bugger has posted a song!

So I give you this (in my mind) slow and initially dullish start that bursts into a fabulous song at 1 minute 20

Hmmm... Musically stumped for now, so I'll go left field with this instead

Really struggled with this one. Its made me think that I have little patience and that if something seems dull at the beginning, I'll bail out early and never find out if it got good. My eventual choice isn't even dull at the beginning, it's just familiar. It then moves onto another plane.

I have the feeling that HWT might not be appreciative of Starewhey 2 Heavin' (this thread is a bit like that game Apples to Apples eh?), so I opted for a song by a group that basically make a living (I hope) from building toward a scary (beautiful?) crescendo. This is actually one of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's shorter compositions, and one that doesn't employ samples of paranoid, dystopian musings.
