What does a bottle of Gordon's set you back in England?

Dunno but I was shocked when the little fella in front of me, at the supermarket, paid £51.46 for 100 cigarettes.

& as an aside to that aside, this morning I watched Sexy Beast which has these as a key plot point:-

I think the hype will subside but the market just got a whole lot bigger.

Gin's been around for centuries and will continue to be so, especially in this part of the world where Sussex has so many good quality gin producers:
Brighton Gin for the summer, a Tom Cat Blueberry for autumn, Chilgrove Bramble for winter and a nice sharp Slake and lime in Spring.

Mrs Jakarta had a G&T in the Black Horse Amberley last night and along with the ice and slice came juniper berries, not come across that one before.

For me gin is gin. Mrs T is a gin snob. To me each one tastes the same as each other. Same rule applies to vodka. The only issue is the octane. Quite different for whisky and for wine. The boudoir of the grain and the grape. Could this be because I don't mix whiskey and wine but I do mix vodka and gin (tonic or bitter lemon)? I have done the frozen neat vodka bollox but how pissed do you want to get? Frozen vodka and a line of coke - so 20th century :lolol:

I thought the same about gins, until someone put me onto Hendrick’s. After tasting that beautiful gin, Gordon’s and Beefeater tasted rubbish.

Gin is an 'on trend' drink at the moment. Vodka had its day before that (Grey Goose, Belevedere etc), and before that it was the Whiskies (Glenfiddich and the likes).

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that the next fad will be not drinking, or drinking less. There's certainly a growing shift in culture with the younger generations who are being a lot more responsible with alcohol than my generation were on the whole...

The proliferation of non-alcoholic beers and ales are helping. Oh, and I tried that 'Seedlip Non-Alcoholic Spirit' last weekend. If you're thinking about dropping £30 on a 700ml bottle... ummm.... don't bother. It tastes like a mixture of shampoo, deodorant, kids medicine and that water which always gets left in the washing up bowl.. . :(

Ah that's finally open, how is it?

Aspiring Gastropub, they reckon they will have 11 rooms for B&B when it is finished in the Spring. The food was very, very good but pricey.

The 4 of us had a 2 course meal along with bottle of decent Grenache - 140 quid including tip.

The place was packed on a Wednesday night, clearly a lot of people have disposable in this part of the world but a bit of a treat for us, won't be eating out again for a while.

Local (Langham) Beers on tap in the Bar were in good nick as we arrived early and had a drink before the Restaurant opened at 6PM.

Good to see a Village Pub reopen.

I used to treat myself to a pack of 20 Dunhill if my mum or Dad gave me a bit of extra pocket money.
Sovereign always gave me a nasty cough through my school lessons.

As was the case with cider then, there is now all manner of gins that have fruit and shit added to them. I can only assume that, as is the case with cider, it's gin for people who maybe don't like gin.

Small point of order - gin HAS to have fruit in it otherwise it wouldn't be .... well .... gin !

The 'artisan' gin phenomenon is , I am sure, great fun for those lovers of gin and it gives people like my dear wife a bit of excitement when she tries the local 'brew' whilst on holiday. So patronising of me!!
As she is a bit of a lightweight:lol: I am sure they all taste good to her,and many others,after a couple!
How successful would the aficionados be in a blind tasting with their favourites mixed with tonic? Mmm, after a couple, not very I reckon. However, it is great to see a bit of fun and interest bought to the market place.
As for me, I am a whisky and cognac man. Can't stand cheapos of either. Likewise port.However, I reckon there are plenty of good value wines to be had in the supermarkets.
On to beer, and having spent a career in the brewing industry, I love to see all the local ales flourishing, but have to say that many so called craft ales appear to overhyped and overpriced. Each to their own though.

Lets hope the price drops accordingly, too many of them are ridiculously overpriced. Currently lidl's is my brand of choice for making my own, Strawberry,Raspberry, Blackcurrant and Sloe -Gins. I will buy a bottle of Gordon's when it's on spesh but other than that it's out of my range along the likes of Hendrick's etc.

Gordon’s left my drinks list when they dropped the ABV and increased the price simultaneouly, effectively creating a double rise in profit. In my view the current gin craze began about six or seven years ago with Bombay Sapphire.

Plenty of great gins and no, they don't alll taste the same. I've developed quite a collection, having been part of a gin club for a couple of years, with a dedicated shelf in the kitchen. It has all got a bit much now, but a lot of the gins are local, so I don't think are ever meant to be huge global sellers like Hendricks, Bombay Sapphire or – one of my current favourites – Monkey 47. There are some other great ones – Manchester Gin, Williams GB, Ozmoz, Fifty Eight, to name just a few. Away from a straight G&T I do love a Red Snapper (gin Bloody Mary), which has GOT to be one of your five a day, no? :lol:

The bubble probably will burst sometime soon, like all these things, when things will go back to normally and the best ones will survive. Having said that I got a present last year to go and make my own gin, which should be a laugh. Fingers crossed it turns out drinkable...
