The bus is empty when it arrives at the stop. I won't bother debating the time into Brighton at 10.30pm.
Unfortunately the queue doesn't guarantee you'll get on the first one that turns up these days. The 30 minutes comes from the B&H Buses timetable.

The police and station staff tend to control the queues quite well to avoid any unsafe situations. Besides, the Japanese are world experts as far as crowded trains are concerned. She'll be fine.

Personally judging by your description of the lady concerned ..comments re Chelsea fans after the cup match I’d go for TB’s suggestion …or leave ten mins early for train or hang around on the concourse post match for a while …that queue for a train isn’t always the most pleasant of places
She might be a Karate expert 🥋

Train. I'm going to come over a bit stereotypical here (but I have lived in Tokyo) but if they are from any large city in Japan they will be excellent at queueing and getting on a packed and standing train. Even the lairiest, most coked up of Chelsea fan is unlikely to bother with trouble with Japanese tourists.
