To be fair, foxes are one of a rare breed of animals that just kill for the hell of it, rather than just for food. If they can get into a chicken run, they will kill everything in sight rather than take just one bird.
I live in a semi rural location and get foxes, deer, badgers, squirrels and hedgehogs in the garden all the time. I used to leave scraps out for the fox, as it looked quite cute with it's frolicking cubs. One day, by way of a thank you, it crapped on the plate I left the scraps on, so that was the end of that.
