What I find so stange about this that records companies/artists etc are always banging on about illegal downloads, copying music, videos on Youtube etc, yet don't seem to give a monkey's that touts are frequently making more out of a concert ticket than they are.

Concert venues should say that you can only enter a venue if you have the credit card that you booked the ticket with. They wouldn't need to check each one, just carry out random checks. If you've paid out loads for a touted ticket you wouldn't risk being one of those that's randomly checked.

Also, why is it Ok to tout concert tickets on Ebay but you cannot sell football tickets.

I'm a bit concerned it is rapidly becoming a Ticketmaster/LiveNation cartel, with smaller ticket companies being swallowed up, and then, with no competition (not that there's much now), prices will skyrocket :(

Reading's official partner is Seeticket and they seem to be quite a large competitor to Ticketmaster. Their preferred tout, I mean reseller, is Viagogo. It is staggering that within minutes tickets were on Viagogo at twice (and more) the face value.

Its simple. If you dont like it, dont buy the tickets. Nobody is forcing you.

Well, here's the thing. Reading tickets sold out in a couple of hours. Many people lost out because they couldn't get through. Within minutes of them going on sale tickets started appearing on Viagogo. I have no objection to people reselling their tickets (but have never done so myself) and consider this a free market, but when genuine fans are unable to buy tickets within minutes of them going on sale because touts are buying them up purely to sell them immediately for twice the face value then the system doesn't seem to be working correctly or in a particularly equitable manner.

I have come to this conclusion. Besides the ticket prices. I have found that going to concerts is becoming a souless experience. I have Depeche Mode and Oasis coming up and that could be it for me.

A couple of years back, NME had a half-arsed campaign to ban touts. All very admirable you msay think.

I wrote a letter to them pointing out the ever so slight hypocracy in this campaign, due to them printing a full-page advert for a company called 'Front Row Tickets' or something like that, who were 'selling' tickets to sold-out events at about 3 times the face value. Not only that, but were advertising tickets for Glastonbury which hadn't even gone on sale!

Needless to say the letter didn't get published...

Why do you think this? I love live music and I get something out of most gigs.

Artists ought to sell tickets at the door entry, on the night, first come first served, end of story. That would destroy these ticket cons right there and then.

Except the old bill would put a stop to that practice immediately when 20000 turn up to try to get tickets for a 2000 capacity venue. They have to have health and safety measures in place, including knowing how many people are due to be in the area.

I love live music but all these bands playing in massive venues where unless you get a decent seat you are just watching a dot on the stage.

There are a lot of great young and/or up and coming bands playing small venues though. i've been to loads of great stuff at Concorde2 over the years.
