Villa aren't in need of a manager they are in need of a philosphy and plan of how to move through the levels.

If (yeah right) they took Potter from us they would sack him. The difference in what we have done is that we have held our nerve when things looked rough (well, I say we, more like the board at the club - we have pissed our pants and posted poll after poll about if he should stay or go ).

If they think Gerard is the man then back him and have patience. Their recruitment seems somewhat scattergun to me, a touch of the Man Us about it.

Villa is a big step up for Potter in terms of experience and learning his craft. At Brighton he's under no pressure. At Swansea he was under no pressure. Does he really think he can step into a top 6 team or England by staying at Brighton?

Potter to Villa makes sense to me.

Potter like every manager needs time to build something special. The bigger the club the less time the managers given. He wont go to Villa, cheque book club in a hurry.

None, he was a bit odd like that - his family were Villa supporters but his first club was Birmingham.

Few years ago he said Barcelona was his favorite club so I guess we should keep track of how Xavi is doing...

It took a long time for this to be posted! It looks to me as if Beale was the brains behind Gerrard's time at Rangers and Villa. He's being exposed now.

Villa fans are deluded if they think they have a hope in hell of getting Potter and it amuses me to read all these plums insisting on it.

Agreed. Potter-Albion is just an impeccable fit. He needs time in order for his ideas to be understood and implemented. Basket case clubs like Villa just don't do time. The Barca link that Swanny has just raised has actually got me worried, as I can't think of too many PL clubs that he'd be interested in going to (and I doubt the usual 'trebling his wages' will wash with him -- some of us are not motivated by money).

I'd love to know about the differences in structure behind the scenes between clubs like ours and Brentford, and pretend big clubs like Everton and Villa.

Fans of the latter talk as if just pinching people like Potter and Frank will just fix everything, but what they don't see or are unaware of is the root and branch reform throughout Brentford and Brighton that mean two clubs with a combined average attendance of 14,000 just 13 years ago are now sitting in perfect new stadiums, have excellent managers, whole new behind the scenes infrastructures (scouting, coaching, academy, commerce, community presence, player procurement etc) that sees us comfortably outperforming the likes of Villa and Everton where it counts.

I would hate to lose Potter and doubt it will happen any time soon, but when he goes we can be assured of one thing - at that point in time, the club will already have drawn up a shortlist of alternatives who they feel would slip seamlessly into the structure of the club. The longer these mid sized Prem clubs act like dinosaurs - bouncing from gaffer to gaffer to fix things, the longer Brighton, Brentford and others will continue to embarrass them.

I can't think of a reason why Graham Potter would leave Brighton to go to Villa. Villa are just a "mid-table club with potential", which is basically what all but a handful of clubs in the league are. That potential has to be measured in more than financial clout, or history or legacy, but in vision, culture, how the club is run etc too. Then people will weigh up what's important to them - a Mourinho or a Guardiola won't go somewhere that doesn't have financial clout. Potter...that's almost certainly lower down his list of what's important when weighing up potential.

If you're sacked it's different, but from a career perspective there has to be something enormously compelling beyond salary alone to choose to leave one "mid table club with potential" to go to another "mid table club with potential" because you're creating your own glass ceiling by doing so. Especially when you're doing a great job at the club you're at. Those jobs at the top 6 are hard to break into, even harder if you're seen as someone who moves around the mid/lower levels by choice.

Also, I'm sure I can't be the only one who has noticed how often he drops into interviews these days how much he loves living here - talks about running along the seafront, walking his dog, his wife's opinion on the gulls, how the family love it etc etc etc. We're not going to lose him mid-season, definitely not to Villa, and I reckon we've got maaaaybe another season or two from him after this one. Let's enjoy it. And let's enjoy it even more if Villa end up with Dyche for their relegation battle.

I couldn’t stand their fans from visits there, not just the one where we blew the Championship title. Hundreds or more thick-as-shit supporters every time obsessed with, the zzzzz homophobia, cut throat gestures to Albion folk there to see the football. I don’t think of them as tough, just plain cringeworthy. I haven’t seen that at Emirates, Anfield, SJP.

I can’t stand their fans either - particularly remember being up there when we were 1-0 and all over them until Mooy got sent off then they won it with the last kick of the game. As we were leaving their fans were taking the piss big time - absolute tossers. And who do they think they are thinking that either Poch or Potter would snap up the opportunity to go there if they make an approach !

Brighton to Villa is not a big step up in footballing terms.
They have the history, but so what? There’s nothing he could achieve there that he couldn’t achieve here.

I hope they don’t but they will this side of Christmas as they will be in or around the relegation zone because of Gerrard’s tactical failings. As it’s been said before, he’s clueless since losing his right hand man Michael Beale.

These clubs have a greater history…but that is what it presently is, HISTORY! All the time we continue to be successful in the present Potter and our players will only leave for a consistent CL club (that’s not Villa) and/or astronomical sums of money. I think we can compete with any managerial salary Potter might be offered. Player salaries are obv a different story.
