This nonsense about diametrical opposites supposedly agreeing with each other is called "horseshoe" theory but it's better called horseshit theory because it falls apart as soon as you look at the actual political issues.

Take the two biggest issues in the Rochdale by-election, service cuts and the Gaza genocide. On these two issues, it's the Centre and Right who agree with each other, with the Left opposing.

Then of course there is the Gaza genocide. Centrists will do sad-face about the dead civilians and kids but will agree with the Right that no action should be taken against Israel for their murderous policies. LocaL Councils are having to cut services because Central government is starving them of cash. The Tories actually want councils to declare bankruptcy because it plays into their hands of promoting Special Enterprise Zones where land grabs can be made.

I disagree with a huge amount of stuff Galloway stands for and I could list them in no order of importance:
He was wrong on Brexit
He was wrong on Scottish independence
He doesn't support humane policy towards trans people in this country
He is personally undisciplined and spouts stuff that you'd expect someone on a football messageboard to say as bantz rather than thinking it through

But for all that, I'm pleased he won because his presence at Westminster will rachet up pressure on the British Establishment to do something about stopping the genocide in Gaza. It's the key moral issue of our time.

Yesterday a picture on social media was circulated showing a young Palestinian kid flattened by a tank, it's genuinely the most appalling thing you'll ever see in your life and I do fear the anger it and 100s of other similar images will inevitably create could radicalise people in this country to do stupid things. It's vital there a cogent, political opposition to the war crimes and, for all his faults, Galloway provides that. We are often lectured by centrists that "grown-up" politics involves backing people you don't agree with 100%, well yes - this is that time

But the effect of this is that Labour councils get blamed for the cuts. One of the reason why so many in the north swallowed Johnson's lies about "levelling up" is that they have been ruled by Labour councils all their lives and polling showed they blamed local politicians for it. The true naivity is thinking you can just be middle-men passing on shit policies and people won't care, they do very much and the data shows it

And let people like Galloway take over? There is a lot wrong with both Labour and more wrong with the Tories but letting in extremist of either end of the spectrum is plain disastrous.

Indeed. The man is an absolute piece of work. Claiming that up is down to justify his choices:

"In August 2010, on his Press TV programme The Real Deal, Galloway interviewed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, following Galloway's participation in a conference for expatriate Iranians whose expenses were paid by Iran's government.[59] Concerning the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman convicted of adultery and sentenced to stoning, which he described as "the so-called stoning case". Galloway said of Ashtiani's sentence during the interview: "Every so often an issue comes along which is seized upon by the enemies of Iran and it becomes a heavy problem and magnified ...".[186][187]"

His reasons for support for Julian Assange beggars belief:

"Galloway continued by stating: "But even taken at its worst, if the allegations made by these two women were true, 100 per cent true, and even if a camera in the room captured them, they don't constitute rape, at least not rape as anyone with any sense can possibly recognise it." He also stated that "not everybody needs to be asked prior to each insertion."[206][207][208] He continued by saying that the allegations, even if true, "don't constitute rape" because initiating sex with someone who is asleep after a sexual encounter the previous night is not rape (one of the women, he said, "woke up to him [Assange] having sex with her again – something which can happen, you know").[205] He said that Assange's alleged actions amounted to no more than "bad sexual etiquette", and he did not believe the women's story anyway.[204]"

And of course, is anti-Semitism, which he defends with weasel words. Like they all do.

The reason is simple: no recognition, no normalisation. Just boycott, divestment and sanctions, until the apartheid state is defeated. I never debate with Israelis nor speak to their media. If they want to speak about Palestine – the address is the PLO.[229]"

Finally, is this the way to deal with conflict? This in 2014. The man is a disingenuous lying anti-Semite.

There is plenty more if you have the stomach to read about a man with sincerely held prejudiced beliefs wrapped up like cold chips in the wet rhetoric of liberation struggle politics.

1 If Israel is not committing a genocide and targetting civilians, then why are they scorching fields and tearing up crops?

The first issue with the Labour candidate was flagged up way before the nomination papers were even printed, all it needed was some rational decisions made at the top level, and the Labour Party would have another MP this morning.

I've been a fan of his in the past, but he is a bit of a political weirdo; he seems to inhabit some space beyond either Right or Left. And whilst that might be the case for a lot of people (those who are economically Left but culturally Right for example) he takes it to extremes. If I were a cynical sort I'd say he picks whatever position will get him the most publicity.

Sad for Rochdale that he unashamedly put their issues second, I'm not sure I'd want an MP whose admitted focus was elsewhere.

I have read about him for 30 years in Private Eye. The common threads to his doings is vanity and venality. He is largely in it for the money, and has managed to monetize a range of 'plausible' activities. Like Farage, but surfing a different set of causes to make a different money-making phenotype.

And of course we can all agree with some things said by both. Like a stopped clock, correct twice a day.

Variation on a theme, my older brother has a flat very near the house which for a number of years he’s rented out to various MPs. In 1997 his existing tenant, a Tory MP was standing down, so when President Blair swept to power as was the drill various offices got in touch regarding a new tenancy. He ended up with a Lib Dem from the West Country, who when they met up to go through all the details told him it would only be for one term, the candidate a retired person had not been expected to win.

Come 2001 my brother got in touch to wish him well, only to be told he would be seeking a second term, it turned out once an MP has won two General Elections they qualify for the MP final salary pension.

So the moral of this story, as we all found out locally, is whatever colour their rosette is, once they get to the trough and like the taste of the water, they are all as bad as each other.

How on earth do you conclude that, on the back of a Lib Dem, who probably didn't expect to win first time round, deciding he'd like to fight to win the seat again? Rumour has it that a tiny percentage of aspiring parliamentarians seek to contribute to the public good. Perhaps he's one?

And in any case, Galloway has already been elected enough times to get the pension so you can hardly accuse him of doing this for that trough. In his case, the annual salary is probably what appeals, albeit he is unlikely to see even one full year of that .

They are not all as bad as each other. That's the most lazy of tropes, one that you appear to have absorbed, possibly by osmosis, by reading tory apologists (having seen yet another of their guys marched out, possibly in cuffs, it is the first mantra they reach for - all as bad as each other).
