Geoff Boycott - a Ron Atkinson moment?

Just driving to work this afternoon, Boycott was talking on talkSPORT about the great West Indies side of the 70s/80s, and their famed pace attack.

His description of their embarrassment of riches in that department went like this:

"With the West Indies it was a bit like shaking one of their coconut trees - only every time a fast bowler fell out, and not a coconut."

Now, I know the wife-beater is a bit 'old school' and unlikely to win any PC contests, but isn't this unacceptable? The presenters (Hawksbee and Jacobs) swiftly moved the conversation on.

What's so offensive about that ? It's not as though he was comparing West Indians to coconuts is it ? I can't stand the bloke personally but I can't see what's so offensive about that statement.

I thought it was just a poor analogy to the fact that pace bowlers were growing on trees back then. As opposed to them living in trees

Nowadays, most atheletes from the Windies seem to shun cricket in favour of richer sports. Perhaps that will now change with the birth of Twenty20 and the IPL etc.

I'm just asking the question. Shaking the NSC tree, and seeing what falls out.

Yes, exactly.

They probably wouldn't mind on talkSport anyway, they probably think Ron Atkinson's sacking is pc gawn mad or somesuch.

Thank you for that, "Shaking the NSC tree, and seeing what falls out" translates to shit stiring:bla:

Only if you allow yourself to be stirred. But I consider myself duly chastised, of course there's no place for that sort of thing on here... maybe the next thread should be about White membership in relation to Man City tickets. I mean, what was the point of filling out that form anyway.

He's said that they had coconut trees, and lots of coconuts, and lots of fast bowlers. Where's the offence?
Agreed, but in today's intolerant, paternalistic, over-regulated, neo-Victorian society SOMEBODY is bound to find it offensive. Therefore (so the theory goes) it IS offensive.

I don't think there's anybody on NSC who's that precious, but you never know.

No No No, the West Indians are not ni**ers the Indians are ni**ers, the West Indians are the wo*s. Very un pc but quite amusing at the time, it has now be bleeped out in any repeats.

I would probably be described as being fairly PC in my outlook and whilst that might be a bit of a poor analogy it can't really be described as racist...he could have said that every time the stork visited it delivered a fast bowler...or something like that. Our Geoff isn't the brightest tool in the box, but he isn't in Ron Atkinson's league, he is just a boring old twat who used to score runs slower than paint dried.

Did he say anything about his tendency to be unavailable for series against oppo with quick bowlers? Curiously, he never seems to mention it when describing his golden career on air...
