Why is 4th July an important day in Rwanda?


This important day signifies Rwanda's transition from an oppressive and discriminatory regime to a democratic nation, honoring the courageous efforts of the Rwandan Patriotic Front in ending the tragic 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

I’m perpetually stunned that there is anyone in 2024 looking at British politics and saying “Yes, this Conservative Party is the party for me.”

How is it possible to carry that much hate for yourself, your country, and everybody in it?

I understand that there are people who will never vote Labour, and that’s fine, the Liberal Democrats exist as a perfectly reasonable centre-right party who aren’t Labour.

If your politics are much further to the right, Reform has your back, they’re there to vote for.

What I genuinely can’t get is anyone watching Rishi Sunak in the rain, as if the British government can no longer afford to host events indoors, and thinking “this incarnation of the Conservative Party is so effective and well-run, another five years of this is EXACTLY what Britain needs.”

I’d be interested in learning whether the IP addresses of those who have voted Conservative actually originated from within the UK. I fear NSC has been targeted in a Russian cyberattack. And @Is it PotG? of course.

I would be genuinely interested to see what the result might be if we had full PR - in that case Reform could smash the Tories. On second thoughts maybe its a good thing we don't and the Tories are there as a home for the reasonable right-of-centre people

That basically leaves Labour, I understand from my dear wife who met Keir several times through work for Camden Council he is charming, passionate, attentive, cares about issues and listens…..

I disagree, support for Reform is greatly exagerated, it is an illusion created by the right wing dominated media, who platform people like Tice and Farage 24/7 to convince people they are the voice of the 'silent majority', but if you look at actual votes they represent about 1-3% of the electorate. They only have 10 councillors after a recent anti-Tory local election! Farage is paraded as some sort of 'man of the people' but never won an election, if he was so popular he would romp an election and stand at this election but he won't as he knows he will get found out. He'd rather leave it to Tice, a prat who'll be forgotten after the election

Reform are the party of the Murdoch empire who's main objective is to pull the Tories further to the right

Apathy is what certain parties are relying on. Especially with younger voters.

They took around 11% of the vote in the recent local elections in areas where they were standing - thats substantive and took place in a first past the post system, it would be higher in a full PR election.

Whoever gets in has a big mess to clear up. It’s not going to be easy, but I believe you should vote. Nobody can see the future, nor should they feel guilty over their choices.

As I've said before, boundary changes plus the national swing against the stories means it's no longer a stronghold. A strong chance Mid Sussex will be a Tory loss.

Is there a time when the country voted in Labour and they 'fecked it up'? Yet the Tories always 'feck it up' in the end

In the last 40 odd years we've had Tories and 1 period of Blair / Brown. That new labour period was the best time of government of that 40+ year period, year upon year of growth, better investment in public services, stronger NHS and most importantly a united country. The Tories have only ever brought division, wealth inequality and decline in public services as they only serve the interests of the wealthy.

The best chance possibly ever for Horsham to not return a Tory. But it's still probably more likely than not going to be Quin.

Electoral Calculus have Horsham down as a rare three-way race but god knows how they work that out on a seat by seat basis.

With a LD majority council now, there are real signs of political will for change in the area. Plus some of the Tory voting bits have transferred to the new East Grinstead seat.

It could happen... Maybe.

Mid Sussex is significantly more likely though.

This is my first GE since moving to Horsham and I won’t be voting Tory, so at least one less vote Probably go LD but undecided right now.

There is no utopia, so ultimately Labour will fail to some degree as too much needs doing.

It’s not just the visible things like pot holes, decaying public buildings, leaking schools and such, it’s been the slow decline and chipping away at our healthcare, education, defence and public services generally.

There is no magic wand, so I’m not even sure what you measure success against, but success isn’t a huge step when measured against the shit show of the last decade.

Stand by for endless weeping from Greens, Liberals and Farage supporters complaining it isn't fair they don't have enough MPs to form a coalition, er, with the Tories. Or Labour. Don't mind really, as long a we can saw we are 'in power'. Hooray!
