Worthing
In 1874, the Liberals got 52% of the votes and still lost, finishing 100 seats behind the Tories.

I think there have been four other occasions since the Second Reform Act where a party has grabbed more than 50% of the vote: 1880, 1886. 1900 and 1931. I can't see if ever happening again.
Is that true?

1931 was the national govt I believe (and in 1935 too)

Yep - also 1951 labour got c230k more votes than conservatives (13.95m to 13.72m) and lost so c1% difference in votes but 30 seats less. Liberals came a distant third with 6 seats with 2.5% of the votes

Yes, Liberals didn't stand in more than 100 seats - so Tories had a pretty free ride.

Strange thing is that, like this year, Gladstone had no need to call an election. He lost because he tried to cut down on drinking.

I remember this from school: we enacted this lesson in class and I was role-playing Disraeli and tore into the 'Gladstone' as someone who wanted to deprive hardworking Britons of enjoying themselves. I think I said something like "Do we want our prime minister to be a politician or a Sunday School teacher?". I won the votes of my classmates, just as as Disraeli won in real life.

One interesting fact from this election: it was the first to be held by secret ballot.

Haha, Rosie is fabulous. I would always vote for her as my MP

If she wasn't a hilarious stage comedian who takes some many folk in :lolol:

I'd love for her to come back with a different spin on the character after this election. Maybe as a disgruntled former MP doing a stint on GB News or something.
