To be socialist they would need to have a substantial part of their means of production in public hands and significant government intervention in the markets, They're not. They have a free market economy just like us but they tax higher and spend more on public services. its great to promise everything to win votes but we have to pay for it in the end and just remember what happened next no money left, yes I want more money for schools and the NHS but let's build a strong encomny but stop slating pepole who start business and provide jobs, I don't mean the companies that dodge paying tax. let's not go back to the old socialist ways. We have a great chance to rebalance the north south divide and give everyone a better standard of living. Please don't return to the 70s sick man of Europe. Strikes strikes and more strikes.
It will be the ordinary working families who will suffer as usual.

Venezuela has had a split economy since 1920. Depending heavily on oil exports to buy in goods, the Government failed to diversify into the Venezuelan economy. The oil industry owners and workers made mega bucks and invested abroad. The poor benefited slightly whilst oil exports poured money into the country. Now there is little oil revenue the rich have their assets abroad to live from and the rest have a peso (I think) that has been devalued to virtually nothing. There is limited food production in Venezuela and little industry due to this limited domestic investment.
I'd put the blame on Capitalism and short term profit from oil that did not allow Venezuela to form an independent economic infrastructure. That's what I heard on Insight BBC World Service at 3am this morning anyway.

And you don't think that 'ordinary' working families as they so nicely put it, are not struggling at the moment.
Nationalised industries were not well run in the 70's I admit, I was there, but that was a long time ago, times have changed, there are many nationalised industries in Europe and around the world that work fine and people are actually proud of them.
Why keep croaking on about the bad old days and actually consider that it may work if run properly, privatisation definitely has not worked, the railways and utilities are and expensive, confusing, mess, let's have more of that shall we.

That's a bold move. First post in and you invoke Godwin's Law. If the Nazi model had been held up as the perfect way to run a country by a democratic right of centre party you'd be spot on. 10 years ago Venezuela was being feted by left of centre politicians, newspapers and film stars as the template for democratic socialism in the 21st century. Socialism in Venezuela is failing and it's brought the country to the brink of disaster. Even Chomsky admits that.

Replacing the social housing that's been sold off, re-nationalising the railways and royal mail, investing in the NHS - These are not the policies of a far left loon, maybe people will see through Corbyn's media portrayal, maybe not though.
