which is a shame, because no one seems to have bothered with the evidence just the politics. the evidence that concludes fed children behave and learn better suggests that free breakfast for all primary school kids would have had a better outcome than free dinners for first three years. (apparently there's nothing conclusive on whether breakfast or dinner itself is better).

The school breakfast is a LUDICROUS idea - breakfast is an opportunity for parents and kids to spend time together, discuss the day ahead etc, whereas school lunch isn't.
Leave breakfast to parents, give free school lunches to kids. If they can manage it in Sweden and Finalnd they can manage it here.

Apart from it was going to be woefully underfunded and figures were based on only 25% take up. That doesn't even take into account that the budget was 25p per head - it would have been a pretty poor breakfast.

If our family didn't talk at breakfast my son would leave for school without his swimming costume / homework / football boots etc, while my daughter would forget who was picking her up, who she was playing with after school, what clubs she had on etc.
It's also an opportunity to calm them down or build them up if they have a test or a presentation.
