A good point worthy of remembering. The unions are so out of touch and inward looking. Had David Miliband prevailed - which was the choice of the PLP and members in country, Labour would be looking at a working majority without any doubt whatsoever.

I suspect that is true. If this pans out as the exit poll suggests he willhave a wry smile on his face.

Results so far have cost the Lib Dems fifteen hundred quid in lost deposits...

I have to say it never feels comfortable, though there are signs with clear rules everywhere. Most people were very willing (you are only able to ask for the polling card number), and only a few didn't want to say. Labour and Conservative tellers were getting on very well together too. We've been very lucky with the candidates in Battersea. Jane Ellison was a very popular MP, with supporters and opponents alike liking her, and I think the Labour candidate, Will Martindale, will go a long way in politics.

I think in Tooting although it's been Labour I think for 20 years - it's marginally marginal and the Tories (who control the council) will obviously try and get everyone out.

I was asked for my address today after refusing to hand over my card - is that within the rules ?

Sunderland West and Washington has had a massive swing to UKIP, with only small changes in the Labour and Tory votes. Most of the Lib Dem vote seems to have gone to UKIP. Very strange election, isn't it?

They can ask for your house number and postcode. Full address is a bit dodgy, and you of course don't have to give it. The reason telling is done is so that canvassers don't have to come and knock on your door and ask you to vote. Getting your vote out is a massive operation, done mostly by volunteers. If anyone asks how you voted, however, that is a criminal offence, which can lead to prosecution, though you would need to raise a complaint pretty well immediately with a polling clerk.

So it could be not Labour backed by the SNP but the Tories backed by the DUP and Cameron failing twice to win an election

It's early days, and only an exit poll.

BUT the Tories backed by a Unionist party compared to Labour backed by a party who wants to break the Union. Very, very different circumstances.
