Nah I got mine in 1968 :(

You'd have done very well to get your GCSE results in 1968. I got my GCE 'O'-level results in 1969..... sorry, just splitting hairs.

And interestingly, listening to the radio at lunchtime, it sounds as if the less lenient marking has really thrown the cat among the pigeons in the education system, with them talking to one head in York (I think) who was panicking about the dip in his results until the grapevine kicked in and he realised all the other schools in the City (and in the Country) were the same. This could have the effect of triggering OFSTED inspections because of unexpected falls in results.

Could it be that the government has put pressure on the examination boards about the dumbing down stuff? If so this is at least an eample of unintended consequences and at worst an example of absolute total incompetence, a la Michael Gove do something now and think about the consequences later...... and he is the darling of the right.

I was always fairly puzzled how results continued to rise year after year after year. So many A's were being awarded that they had to introduce A* to give these geniuses something extra to aim for.
In the 50's 60's and 70's there was never this rise in results every year. A fall here, a rise there. No significant pattern.
Have the last two generation of kids been more gifted than those before? Or are we all victims of a misguided government, hell-bent on its own agenda, at the expense of the kids themselves.
The desire to see more and more people enter into further education is admirable but has it all been achieved on the back of less rigorous marking.
If so, they have let the kids down. The cream will always rise to the top but in recent years there seems to be very little to seperate their results from the mainstream.

Well done to everyone who's done well, and commiserations to the ones who haven't. I'll let you in on a little secret though - while your GCSE's might seem like the most important things that you will ever take......when you have the benefit of looking back, they're really not as important as life skills (honesty, morals, social skills). Those are the soe of the things that will get you further in the world, not bits of paper!!! But well done for coming through them, they can be a very stressful thing to do.

One possible solution to your conundrum is that teachers are teaching better and the young people are working harder. Teachers are better trained and for the most part better motivated. And if they are not good enough and /or can't be bothered, they are far more likely to be dealt with accordingly. I am speaking from some degree of knowledge, having been the chair of governors of a local primary school a few years ago
