Mark Bosnich!!

That is all.

Not the same thing though is it? Bosnich was getting on for 30 when he went to Man U and spent just a season there. He already had a troubled record when he turned up, having been fined for the Nazi salute and had been arrested for a nightclub incident. The problems were sown long before he went to Man U. Gazza was 21 when he signed for Spurs and had a career ahead of him.

Nah. Rooney is no Gascoigne. I have no idea why there should be a comparison. Rooney seems a fairly sensible lad - considering the adulation he is used to receiving.

Gazza was exactly the same age as rooney is now when he crocked himself, the catalyst some say for his going off the rails massively.

At that point not many people were saying oh that Gazza will end up dead in a ditch or predicting his current ahem issues. He could have run for parliament and probably got in at that time, unlike rooney who has the nation on his back already.

To me Gazza was at that time a fully formed fruitcake - he would have been good company for about five minutes. He looked like he would be a nightmare to be around. That is not to say he looked like he would end up in the mess he is today - but he was not what you would call "normal".

Rooney does look a "normal" sort of bloke to me.

Gazza is not the sharpest tool in the box but it beggars belief that he has not tried to get professional help.

Sadly, his übe-muppetry seems to know no bounds. Maybe somebody could cheer him up by taking him out for a fish?

Couple of things on that ... he was 27 when he signed from Aston Villa, and I don't remember any story of him being a coke head when he was at Villa. That all seemed to happen when at Man Utd.

If you think that is too old to be influenced and it all happens in your much younger days, then he signed for Aston Villa in 1992, aged 20, so where had he been in the years prior to that .... Manchester United.

Look, I'm not saying this was Fergie's fault, not at all, players have to take responsibility for their own actions. What I do object to is this blanket argument that always seems to get applied to Gazza (and any other wayward character) that if they had only played under SAF it would have all been different.

I agree with you that this idea that SAF is some sort of glorified social worker is a bit far-fetched. He's certainly not a malign influence though.

But I do think it's a bit unfair to blame Bosnich's problems on Man U. No other player at Man U seems to have drug issues. On the other hand, some clubs seem to have a long history when it comes to players with drink and drug problems - notably Chelsea and Tottenham, And where was he Bosnich when the problems with surfaced? Chelsea.

Neither am I Gwylan, in fact I said "I'm not saying this was Fergie's fault, not at all". Not blaming him at all. I give this as an example that fergie doesn't have a magic wand that keeps players on the straight and narrow, and likewise there is no guarantee that Gazza would have been any different had he played under Fergie.

It sadly looks inevitable that Gazza will go to prison now along with his drink-driving charge hanging over him. You'd think it would be the wake-up call that he needs but I think going to jail would finish him off completely with his fragile mental state but having said that I'm aware that around 80% of prisoners have some kind of mental health issue. Gazza seems to have shunned a lot of support offered to him but it's very hard not to have sympathy for the bloke.

Unfortunately, Gazza has yet to hit rock bottom and ultimately only he can help himself. Just hope it happens before its too late.
