Loved watching at his best as a fotballer, but what a complete an utter tool he has become.

It's getting to the stage when you wonder where it all ends for him. Out of curiosity, I wonder if he appears on the celebrity death list betting for 2011? Two drink driving charges already pending, at least one of which he's likely to be jailed for, another arrest, and he appears to be a chronic alcoholic.

His health, mentally and physically, must be in a dreadful state. Nightmare for his family, especially his kids, to see him so publicly fall apart.

He had it all, and threw it all away. If he'd settled down with Cheryl instead of beating seven shades of shit out of her, he'd have had a proper family life to keep him on the straight and narrow. Instead he's become estranged from his family, he's never had the support from his parents, and all he has as 'friends' seem to be hangers-on.

I remember watching that documentary on him a few years ago when he was playing in China. Clearly trying to carve out some kind of a career there, his dad and "best mate" 5-bellies flew out there and just went out on a series of benders with him (with Gascoigne picking up the tab). An abiding image was of the three of them in a deserted karaoke bar one afternoon, Gascoigne warbling drunkenly on the microphone, all of them absolutely off their tits.

I know his problems are mostly self-inflicted, but the guy seems to have had zero support from anyone to try and sort his life out.

Garforth Town - it didn't happen in the end.
Unsuprisingly.

It's hard to feel sorry for an alcoholic, and Gazza is probably in a better position than most to get support (and pay for it). I guess nobody makes a conscious decision when they first start drinking that they're going to ruin their whole life, it just sort of descends that way until it becomes too hard to stop. That's how I was always taught to look at people, and I've probably dealt with more addicts than most.

How sad that none of his so called mates- who in reality appear to be little more than hangers on seeking the reflected glory of Gazza's fame- don't seem to have done a thing to get a grip on his very obvious problem. Because he doesn't show any signs of actively dealing with it himself. Itll be hard for them to live with if he ends up topping himself.

Thats the thing though - sure, he can (and has) checked himself into clinics to try and beat his addictions. Thats support of a kind. But he seems to be a very lonely man, with no moral support from friends or family to help him. I'm not making excuses for him - its his behaviour that has clearly driven these people away and thats his own fault. Part of me does still feel sorry for him though, he's such a damaged individual and doesn't seem to have much to live for now other than the bottle.

Prison would probably finish him off.

Looking at Jimmy Gardener these days (a few years after falling out with Gazza), he's fit and healthy looking, having trained for the Great North Run. Maybe it was Gazza who was dragging him down, and not the other way round, as is often what got reported.

does anyone else think rooney is heading down the same road as gazza?

It's an interesting thought. There was this generally held belief that if Gazza had gone to Man U instead of Tottenham, then Taggart would have looked after him as he made sure young players didn't go astray.

Rooney's antics have made that theory look a bit wobbly and if does go down the same path as Gazza, I guess we'll hear little more of it.

Having said that, the last place that Gazza should have gone to was the Venables-run Spurs, virtually anywhere would have been better than that.

hope I'm wrong, but just have a feeling that at some point Rooney is going to come off the rails big time, similar to Mr Gasgoine

Nope. Gazza was introduced to Telly Vegetables spivvy beer drinking culture and was left unchecked. Rooney hasn't had this at all. Rooney is going through a rough patch but is still *very* young, and I suspect he'll get through it.

Well I feel for him. A great footballer and a decent guy too, with mental health problems and a lack of support from freinds and family.
