The airport costs for roads, security etc are all there whether or not you drop-off at the terminal. There is no cost to the airport specific to car drop-off.

Someone has been paying for this though. So what you’re saying, is that others have previously been subsidizing your free drop-offs. That’s unfair.

Picked Daughter up on Tuesday, long stay is free for 2 hours, they hopped on a bus and met me there. Very easy stress free option all be it it adds a 5min bus transfer for the travellers.

Edit - sorry didn’t realise this was past not future!!

Is the bus free?

Subsidizing? That's a strange way to look at it. Who is subsidizing you when you are dropped off at the pub, restaurant, cinema, casino ,train station, bus station, shopping centre, supermarket? Isn't all the infrastructure just the capital and associated maintenance cost built into the business model?

Pretty sure it’s not a public highway and is private property you’re driving on to drop off. Think the £5 charge is a blatant money grab and a rip off but it’s their land so they can do what they want.

Yes there is, they have had to provide and maintain an area suitable for doing so, with lay by areas, pedestrian crossing, lifts, escalators, smoking shelters, and staff specific to ensuring the drop off area is not abused.

That's not a rational argument. Johannesburg airport has two terminals and is one of the major African hubs.

It’s not rational that everyone who travels through Gatwick can expect space to just pull up and drop off. As said to you Gatwick provide free parking to drop / pick-up passengers at long stay just 5mins from the airport. I think those that want to pay the £5 great, but it’s not like there’s no other options because there is.

I’m getting a bit bored of this thread now but after all the shit UK airports and airlines have been through, the debts they’ve run up, you are quibbling over a new 5 quid charge. A charge which in the grand scheme of a holiday is negligible. A charge which if you want to avoid you can. A charge which, I guess, is connected to something which is totally non-essential. If it helps the airport, keeps people in work and keeps airplanes flying I am all for it.

I hope you expend the same level of time and energy on issues that really matter.

That is not a car drop-off area. It is an arrival area that is used by busses, coaches and staff coming to work as ell as passengers arriving for their flights.

The car drop-off area has all of that. Buses don’t use it, they go underneath the building.

The "space" as you call it, is there as part of the building and facilities to enable all passengers and staff to enter and leave the terminal. It's not there just for drop-off and it's not rational to only charge drop-off cars for stopping there briefly.
