Good luck Joe. Never given a chance and treated and abused disgracefully by fans on here and at Withdean. it's shame immediate success is the measure of a good player in some of our fans' eyes.

I didnt think he was as bad as some people made out to be, he was always good at getting the tap in in the 6 yard box, we dont really have one of those.

He always looked a class above in the reserves, but rarely showed it when he did play in first team. Always remember the 1-0 win at Chesterfield 2 seasons ago. A Rents cross from a corner to a Gatting finish, and the crowd singing LOUDLY for the whole game, ending with Wilkins speech to the crowd.

Text book Gatting scrappy finish
Gatting wasn't particularly good in that game though! Finish was a bit of a scuff. I think the whole "fox in the box" thing is overstated. I think he just thrived at youth level because he had a bit of strength, but at first team level he was nowhere near strong enough and the truth is unfortunately he wasn't good enough.

I hope he goes on and does well whether it's in football at a lower level or if he pursues cricket, or whatever else he might do, because despite what a lot of people said I do think he tried his best for us. He just wasn't very fast.

A goal-poacher who needed a run of games in the team to prove his worth - not just ten minutes here, 5 there.

Held the ball up well as well.

Shame he has been released but not exactly a shock.

Agreed. However what counted against him was he didn't exactly set the world alight when he went on loan. You'd have thought that if he had something to offer they'd have been singing his praises at Woking; after all Jake Robinson was quite well thought of at Aldershot and the Orient fans raved about Hammond when he was there. I think the fact that Gatting couldn't hack it at Woking meant the writing was on the wall for him in pretty big letters. Probably ditto for Dixon at Forest Green.

Agreed. That, and he could hold the ball up with his back to goal better than probably just about anyone else I've seen playing for the stripes. Really.

You're kidding, right ? I found him quite exhasperating, as despite been fairly well built, he never seemed to put himself about much, and was easily brushed off the ball. His touch was poor, and far from holding the ball up, he'd simply be out-muscled.

Our opinion of his hold-up play are absolutely POLES apart.

I don't think I ever saw him 'brushed' off the ball. Give it to him with his back to goal, and anyone coming in on him would be battered aside. Very strong when static.

Sadly very static most of the time.

You ever met him? He is 'SOLID'.

I suspect you're thinking of Paul Brooker. Or a puff of wind.

When he was sent back by Bognor as not being good enough for their team must have sounded alarm bells and I am sure that I read soemwhere then that BHA had said he could find another club. It has probably taken this long to reach a settlement. His biggest problem was his mobility in that he couldnt move fast enough to get on the end of the balls that weere meant for him.

I dont think that Lewes or Crawley will be interested and would be suprised if anybody above Worthing are to be honest. Shame really because he was good at Youth level.

Going on from that my brothers mates son plays for Chelsea under 14s having been with them since u10s and last week they lost 3.- 0 to BHA and according to his mate BHA played Chelsea off of the park. So perhaps more coming through for when we get to Falmer, lets hope so.

Not if they can find Dixon first.

Allegedly, he was last seen cutting up half-time oranges for Hastings Hawks (under 8's) - when he failed to win a place on their bench last Sunday

Fair enough - he needs first team football, Brighton can't offer him that.

Don't talk rot. He needs first team cricket, cos he was NEVER a footballer. Even Bognor sent him back. Sorry, but he always looked about as at home being a footballer as Prince Edward looked being a Royal Marine. The rellies patently pressured him into doing it, and the old pals act gave him the leg-up. Another Daniel Webb, whose dad's probably STILL calling in favours from mates all over the country to get his boy a squad number.
Nice lads, lousy footballers.
