Very loyal player, rarely do you stay at a top club for your whole career - take a bow and great player for England.

This. Not sure why he gets the hatred he does, well apart from that from Liverpool fans.

To be honest the lad has made a career out of baiting Liverpool fans and personally I have found it highly amusing.

You sure, average player at best, very ugly, great at fouling any decent winger, no left foot, and scores a goal every time Haileys comet passes!!! Good riddance

Nasty, snarling, dirty bastard who played for the least popular club in the known galaxy, was always, always in refs' faces and will be truly missed only by those inside Old Trafford. IMHO the game's better off without him - I was at that game at OT where he ran 60 yards to celebrate in the Liverpool fans' faces, stoking up an already volatile atmosphere with actions that would not be tolerated if they were carried out by fans.

A good full back, yes, but people thought he was better than he was because he played in a dominant team, and got away with constantly fouling oppos. I suspect he'll end up on bloody Sky, since they seem to love his club so bloody much.

Didn't like his attitude to refs, but loved the way he got into Liverpool fans faces - isn't that exactly what most of us would do? Imagine you were playing for the Albion at Selhurst Park and had just scored, or won a tight game , wouldn't you just love giving it large to the palace fans? I know I would

Agree with KG above, you'd love him if if did the same for our club re Palace.

And was actually a better defender at his peak than he's had credit for, his ability was often overshadowed by the fact he's a United player and known to be a bit of a barrack room lawyer.

Close the door on your way out, ****.

Lest we forget that tried to get the England football team to go on strike because he didn't like the ban his dopey reach-around partner got for 'missing' a drugs test.

This obviously has nothing to do with the fact that he is about 6th in line to get a place in the Man U defence.

Not sure what point you are trying to make there, BG.

It has everything to do with that, and I'm sure he wouldn't deny it. His age and fitness have lead to that situation so it was a logical move to retire.

Agreed, great player always let his football do the talking, rather than the back pages of the tabloids.

...Are you trying to suggest Gary Neville WASN'T outspoken?!?

Indeed. I also heard that during the German world cup he spent most of one night on the blower to various newspapers pleading for them not to run stories about his father's pissed up behaviour in BadenBaden. Great preperation for a major tournament. And people still say he is a dedicated England player.

A lot of his rants are very ill-informed as well.

He's a prick.

Least popular club in the galaxy? Yeah, cos Man U have no supporters? I'd say that globally (keeping it just to this planet rather than, like you referring to the whole galaxy) surely they are the most supported and hence most popular?

Most disliked, then. I had, though, rather hoped my use of the words 'known galaxy' would have given away that fact that I wasn't being completely serious on that point.

And in response to Kalimantan, I have to say old boy, no I wouldn't. I hate all that shit - fans get slaughtered for the slightest misdeeds so why players should be allowed to get away with stoking up potential trouble is beyond me. I'd automatically book any player deliberately baiting oppo fans when they score, including our own.
