Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

As you've pointed out with the unclear guidelines, the BBC doesn't even know what 'due impartiality' means.
And that's because it's ultimately meaningless. As pointed out previously, it's 'due impartiality' and the way in which it's wielded that's causing the BBC its current (and recent) problems. It's too unwieldy. They need to have something more specific such as, for instance, impartial with regard to political parties (which should be applied to those working in news).
I'd rather that they did employ people with party and other political allegiances, so long as they treated their interviewees fairly -- Nick Robinson and Jeremy Paxman, for instance, both have aligned themselves with conservatism and/or the Conservative Party, but they're excellent -- but, unfortunately, we're now in such a desperate situation that anyone working in the BBC news has to operate under a facade.

I’d agree with all of that with the possible exception of limiting the impartiality wrt political parties solely to those working in news. My reservation isn’t philosophical; it’s practical. You now place a burden on the organisation to ensure that the number/vociferousness/articulacy of those openly advocating one party is balanced by those advocating another. This is an impossible task. Thus, the organisation as a whole leaves itself open to accusations of bias: ‘Look, there’s a clear left/right wing bias in the public utterances of those employees you allow to talk about their party political allegiances. Surely it’s reasonable to conclude that you’ve recruited with the same mix in those departments where you do not?”. Simpler by far to only recruit people who understand why the organisation must be impartial and agree to keep their party political thoughts to themselves? This latter policy may lead to those with passionately held allegiances not wanting to be employed by the BBC; I’m not convinced that’s a bad thing.

Much preferred that to the normal show.
You do realise you could get the same experience every week by going to your sports website of choice and watching the highlights of each game, one after the other? You could even choose to watch the Brighton game first every week, and you wouldn't have to wait until 10.20pm.

It's bizarre that people watch MOTD when they don't like the punditry bits. It's literally what it's there for.

It doesn't bother me enough to get onvolved in pointless arguments, no. It does amuse me to come on here occasionally and read that in Lineker's defence he never mentioned the Nazis - just 'Germany in the 1930s'. Presumably just referencing the price of fish.........

P.S. The way MOTD was broadcast was one of the biggest flounces of the 21st, century - Sulks'R'Us!

Its a bit of a confusing comical defense though and sort of begs the question if Lineker wasnt referring to Nazis with the reference to Germany in the 1930s who in 1930s Germany is he referring to?

It's very rare that l focus on individuals, but l do like Gary, and think he is a big part of MOtD.
He doesn't offer the general license fee payer any value with his gold plated salary, before you even start talking politics, which should be left at the door if we're being honest.

Don't care if he's a champagne socialist or a Tory nut, he's not being paid for political commentary, balanced or otherwise.

will be an interesting week, Lineker cannot be sacked else they will have a mutiny. their only choice is to backtrack and let him carry on tweeting and apologise for their epic misjudgement
The DG has said in an interview reported yesterday he intends to review the social media guidelines for non-political presenters at the BBC, and that Lineker is the best there is.
Reading between the lines, staff at the BBC seem to be gunning for the chair! ….. rebelling against the Tory war against the BBC.

What Lineker didn't do is compare Tory government policy with that of the Nazis, only the language used in the early days of the Nazi party compared to the language used now.

He is right of course.

Have you read the thread? Ok it's 1300 posts or whatever but you don't have to read it all. The answer to your question has been discussed and explained multiple times already. I'm not going to do it again as I can't be bothered and people start talking about an "echo chamber" when the same points are made over and over again. Scan the thread, look for references to "language".

The 'Nazi Party' wasn't in power the whole of the 1930's

The social and economic upheaval that followed World War I powerfully destabilized the Weimar Republic, Germany's fledgling democracy, and gave rise to many radical right wing parties in Weimar Germany.

The Weimar Republic, Germany’s 12-year experiment with democracy, came to an end after the Nazis came to power in January 1933 and established a dictatorship.

Yes, one really gets fed up with MOTD being the Saturday version of Newsnight - discussing the merits and demerits of the Windsor Framework rather than the niceties of De Zerbi’s game plan.

or alternatively, can you name an instance when he didn’t leave politics at the door for MOTD? All his non-football comments are very much in his own name.

He wasn't paid for political commentary. Posting on his personal Twitter account is something he does in his personal time, outside of work.

No i havnt read the thread and have no intention of reading it all or scanning it, whatever the frack that is.
All i asked is if it isnt the Nazis being referrenced to Germany in the 1930s who was having a bit of a carry on in Germany in the 1930s to warrant a reference to that period that presumably everyone will recognise.............because its the 1930s and its Germany.
Was it Lederhosen flat earthers?
