Now Gary Hart was a player for us in the dark days, and it has been a source of continual surprise that he has moved up the divisions with the team.

And well done to him for making the most of his talents to be a professional footballer. But it must be an indictment of our game that a player with so little footballing nous survives in Division Two. I am used to his unwillingness to get into the box, but on Saturday he twice gave away possession when we simply needed to hold onto the ball.

And at present, he doesn't appear to be putting the effort in. Gary mate, putting the effort in is your game, it that isn't there, what is left?

What worries me about Hart is where has his electric pace gone? He's not that old! He's been beaten for pace by the full backs on countless occasions this season. His game was knock the ball down the line, get your head down and run like a bastard after it. 9/10 he would beat the defender to the ball too! These days he always gets beat!

I think the right time to discuss this is after the season has ended, not when we've got 6 big matches and should all be getting behind the team.

yes, apologies for undermining team confidence. Sorry Gary mate, I know you are reading this. You really are a very good player. Only could you just get a little bit fitter. If it's not too much trouble.

that better pavilionaire ?

The general malaise of OGH has been sad to see, he's been very poor for most of the season. There was a brief spell a few months back where it looked like he may have been rediscovering his form when he put in a couple of decent-ish performances, but that turned out to be a flash in the pan. Maybe the injuries have taken their toll, or perhaps his "heart" (no pun intended) just isn't in it any more like it used to be. He could always be relied on to whip in 2 or 3 decent crosses during a match, but his contributions have even lapsed behind the Jones level now, and I struggle to remember any positive contribution lately, other than just turning up.

Is it time he was put out to graze ?

I tend to agree with DKM.
Like Kerry Mayo he has grown with us .... but is he out of his depth now?
But what are our options on the right?
We seems to have a midfield where only Chippy and Charlie are ever-present (and Charlie is limited in real ability).
Our so-called wide players: David Lee, Nathan Jones and Gary Hart are all found wanting.
There may be merit in bringing Dan Harding back into a left sided midfield role, but that still leaves the right flank unanswered.
What about our new Aussie guy?
Think we will struggle in Div 1 next season unless we rebuild our midfield from scratch

I think Gary's broken leg has affected his pace and confidence. As one who's been there I know too well the physical and psychological effects of a broken leg, and I only played pub football! He is one of our 200% ers along with Cullip and Chippy and is worth his place for that.

I just think there's something wrong in having a go at specific players at this stage of the season on the back of a good 2-0 home win and a decent run of results.

For the record I think Harty put in a lot of effort on Saturday, as did the rest of the team, which is why we won.

Yeah, have a go if we drop points or if someone is completely shit, but neither applies in this case IMHO.

Good point OTLW.

We seem settled at the back with Harding, Virgo & El-Abd not only looking comfortable but quite often being our best players.
We probably could do with one more striker and that leaves the midfield........

Hart - see above
Jones - usually 89 minutes of medicrity with one great cross - is it enough?
Carpenter - Consistent but not spectacular
Oatway - Gives his all but limited
Lee - Do we really know what his abilities are? but given his pedigree(Southend Reserves) he seems unlikely to fulfill the role
Rodger - Injured - will he be back to his best?

For what it's worth, I thought Gary played pretty well on Saturday. A markedly better performance that some of his earlier games this season. And what I like is that he always gives 100%, unlike one or two other members of the squad.

Agree .... if you think back to last season when we had Sidwell (temporarily) Brooker and Rodger ... plus Chippy and Charlie, we actually had a half decent midfield.
Hope McGhee can get hold of a couple of midfielders (or even three) of the calibre of Brooker and Sidwell. Even if Rodger comes back, we can only expect another season or two max from him .... age is unfortunately against him.

I thought he had one of his best seasons in the 2nd division championship season but since then apart from odd spells he's been very poor so the broken leg must of played apart in that.i wouldnt get rid of him cos he,s a handy player 2 av on the bench but certainley doesn't justify a regular place

Harty owes the club nothing, he cost us next to nothing and has given 100% virtually all his career with us but at the end of the day, possibly due to his injury or maybe even that it's just time for a change of scenery we have probably seen the best from a few of our current squad. Don't forget that Mickey Adams put together a lot of this squad with the objective of getting out of the third because they had already done it with other clubs. A few of them were already at a higher level but weren't exactly reaching for the stars. Micky took some ordinary ingredients and added the magic formula that was zamora and created the perfect recipe for brighton in the third division. It also survived the taste test in Division two but was found to be too plain by the time it reached division one. Now we are finding that some of the ingredients still being used are a bit stale and possibly coming towards their sell by date.
The current chef will need to look through the cupboards during the summer, clear out the out of date stock and take a visit to the supermarket for new supplies or go to the vegetable garden and grow some more of his own which has borne some fruit already this season.

Well written MM

I take it we will have a midfield of Jamie Oliver, Nick Nairn and Ainsely Harriot next season ....

with perhaps Safeway and Morrison at the back!

If our whole midfield is limited, then how is it that we are doing so well? Ok, we're not top but we're up there, and are coming in to finish the season on a great run (hopefully...) Yes, a lot of our players won't make it in div 1 if we get there, but they're good enough to get us promoted, as we have seen before, so no need to complain at the moment. Hart is a legend, and always will be. If he's making mistakes, he's still putting in 110% and if that's enough to spur on other players to do the same, then keep him in. I do competely agree that his injury has affected him, maybe with a summer of training he will be back to what we know he can be next season, but he's still one of our best midfielders. Everyone goes through bad patches. (I'm not that biased, honest)
