Gareth Bale "could be banned" by FIFA

So basically, Blatter has mouthed off and potentially created an issue about something that really isn't that much of an issue. Maybe, just maybe, he withdrew because he was injured and his recovery has been quicker than expected? Who's to say? And as JJ McClure said, who would complain?

Just Blatter spouting off more best ignored nonsense again.

I agree with the sentiment, but FIFA have stated they will only act if they receive a complaint from the FA.

It doesn't matter one jot to the FA or the FAW whether Bale is involved in the Olympics, its nothing to do with them, so presumably the complaint would have to come from Stuart Pearce / Team GB. And they're probably too busy getting prepared to try to avoid a monstering from Senegal to get involved in a pointless squabble that will ultimately achieve precisely nothing.

It leaves a sour taste, but this is all a sideshow gimmick anyway. We're never going to bother with a GB football team after this tournament, we've never taken it seriously, and still won't after this.

I just think the FA do have an interest along the same lines as my post. While the Olympic team doesn't matter to them, this is something that keeps cropping up for the FA when there is an England match, so this would be about putting a marker down in the sand, and saying that they will apply the sanctions over players and clubs.

AVB has already said he is taking a risk in playing him. But maybe that's just to help cover the fact Bale didn't want to be in Team GB?

Have you not read the thread, he can't play for GB because he was not selected.

He was not selected as he was injured at the time of selection (AIUI whilst with the GB squad, not Spurs "telling" them he is injured - so different to the examples you are thinking of).

I can only assume GB had final preparations (after selection) to do leading up the games and didn't want to disrupt things by bringing back a player who has recovered (understandably not way of knowing if he would or not at the time) and also, which selected player do you get rid of to make way for him. Also, I assume there is a cut off date for ALL teams where they have to submit their squad lists so couldn't retrspectively select him anyway.

As I say, a non-story and Bale (AFAIK) has done nothing wrong, neither have Spurs.

It comes down to what Stuart Pearce was told at the time. There is NO WAY Bale was omitted on ability, as he is a superb player, so it seems logical that he was left out because Pearce and co were mis-informed as to his level of fitness, extent of his injury. That is down to Pearce and the FA to decide, as none of us were party to the conversations that took place, but I smell a rather familiar rat on this one.

If however, the GB team assessed the injury and made the call to not risk selecting a player who may not be fit, then fine, presumably no complaint would be made. My post(s) are working on the basis that this was NOT the case, and whether no complaint will come from the FA because they do not have a vested interest in the GB Team for the Olympics. I don't think that should stop them, if they feel there is a case to answer, then go for it!

Do you really think it would change anything though ?

When it comes to England withdrawls, I don't think the FA can do much more. They already insist on the "injured" player being examined by England medical staff before being deemed unfit for England duty - outside of that, what else can they do ?

Pointless competition. The fact that we wouldn't have a Football team GB if we weren't holding the Olympics says a lot. I won't be watching and I don't blame Bale if he couldn't be bothered either.

As I recall, he was training WITH the GB squad when getting injured. If Pearce was "misinformed" about his injury BY the GB squad physios etc., NOT Spurs, unless anyone has any evidence to the contrary?

Bale has also expressed a desire (see bbc link in page 1 of this thread) to play (Wales aren't getting anywhere near an internation comp any time soon :D) so wouldn't want to bale(!) out.

I appreciate what you are getting and and agree that there are plenty of potential examples of players being reported as "injured" by their clubs to avoid games but this case is clearly (as it stands) NOT an example of this (apart from to the conspiracy theorists :D).

well from the information we have, that IS the case, so maybe calm down a bit? this is because Blatter and a few others havent taken the time to check their facts and sounded off.

What I find strange is that it was decided very early that Bale wouldn't be fit (despite his subsequent miraculous recovery), whereas Sturridge was kept with the squad to see if he recovered from (suspected) meningitis - to quote the BBC website "If Sturridge fails to recover in time for the Olympics, coach Stuart Pearce can chose a replacement from one of four standby players who will be named on 25 July"

While I'm really not overly bothered by who represents Team GB, or even sure there should be a Team GB football team at all, it does annoy me that players/clubs concoct injury stories (or over-egg minor injuries) to withdraw.
The cynic in me says it's all about the extra £££$$$ (from endorsements) they can earn due to being an international and that few are actually that bothered about playing for their country. They can't withdraw on the basis that they don't want to play as they will have to officially 'retire' from internationals, but by being very flaky they can reduce the time they spend on international duty (keeping their clubs happy and also, to be fair to them, getting the break that their bodies need) and trouser the extra cash. Do they really need the extra cash?!

Everybody is aware it was the team GB doctors that said he was unfit? No.... Ok

It won't go any further as it was the GB doctors that said he shouldn't be selected, Bale went against his country to play, I doubt spurs would stand in his way

I can't believe that Ryan Giggs has made it. He seemed to have such bad luck with injuries whenever he was called up for Wales (cough)
