We went to Mansfield when they had gale force winds the night before which had damaged the roofing and perimeter fencing at Field Mill. Somebody said the game had been called off while we were at Sheffield but we thought it was a wind up. Found out from fellow Brighton fans who were standing around on the platform at Worksop that the game had been called off but we decided to continue the journey down to Mansfield. We walked over to Field Mill and there didn't seem to be any structural damage to the stands but they were probably afraid that fans would be able to get into the stadium without paying as the corrugated fencing had blown down. Managed to catch a direct train back from Worksop which only stopped at Retford and Gainsborough and got back to Crap Town about 2.30 . Needless to say the re-arranged fixture was on a Tuesday night which we couldn't go to.

Way out west
Only once set out from home to go to a game and find it had been postponed, that was a game at the Goldstone, because of snow...pretty sure it was against Reading in early 87...got as far as Victoria from North London...spent the day dossing around London instead.

Halifax on a Tuesday or Wednesday night and the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at 7.00pm just as we were driving into the car park.

I once when driving home from Scotland, stopped at a garage for fuel and picked up a paper and saw we were playing Brentford that evening so stopped off at Griffin Park but it was in darkness. Rechecked with my paper and realised I had bought the day befores paper and the match had been on the previous night

We got to the train station at Grimsby just before buying tickets when the game at Halifax was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The previous evening they played a rugby match at the ground which was televised by Sky and the pitch was soaked and muddy , so wasn't too surprised it was postponed.

Mine were pretty much the same as the others on here. I was in Carrow Road when the game was called off.

I was also on my way to Mansfield Town when the game was postponed due to the gales and we turned around and game home.

Another was the Halifax game where we made it all the way to the Shay only to find the match was off. We were mighty pissed off but felt better on the way home as Mansfield beat Cardiff, which geatly helped our promotion/champsionship charge in League 2.

The final one I can remember was being on a mini-bus on our way to Macclesfield when we heard the match was postponed so we decided to head off to watch Watford v Sheffield Wednesday instead.

In all the cases above I managed to get to the re-arranged game.

Otley to Bath yesterday! Left later than normal as there was an 11.00am pitch inspection so I could be called back if it was off, and wouldn't have travelled too far. Instead they kept delaying until eventually calling it off at 1.20pm (kick-off at 2.45pm), just as I was pulling into the park and ride in Bath ..... @rse!!!!

By the way passing by Bescott yesterday, it was one of the least icy places on the journey south!

Insider has just replied to my question about a pitch inspection but it seems to me that the FL do not care enough about supporters.

I would think that if a man is qualified enough to be 4th official he would also be qualified enough to decide whether a game can go ahead or not and if there was any doubt the club should be able to call him in to inspect the pitch. As I pointed out most 4th officials live reasonable near to the home ground, in our case usually the chap in Lewes.

Is it not time that the FL should be bombarded with requests to change the rules to allow this and thus give some consideration to both travelling fans and even teams which cannot afford the wasted journey.

Bristol Rovers years ago ( they were still at their old ground, that's how long ago), arrived at the ground to find the game off due I think to a waterlogged pitch.

We travelled overnight by coach from London to Newcastle in 1990 or 91 (can't rememebr off the top of my head).

Got about halfway when it started snowing really heavilly and the prospects for the game got steaedil;y worse thge further north we went. we arrived in Newcastle around 6 ish in the morning when a postponment was bleedin' obvious (at least four inches of snow on St James' Park).

So we hunted around for somewhere else to watch a gaime (having gone all that way we migt as well get to see a agame) and so we went to watch Berwick Rangers p[lay East Fife in the Scottish Second Division (which irinically was never ion any doubt)
