The most atmosopheric singing of Sussex by the Sea I've ever heard was by the old soldiers of the Royal Sussex Regiment at their 2007 annual reunion, at Lewes Town Hall. This was the year of the SBTS centenary, and to hear the veterans and their guests sing all five verses as they did, and accompanied by a real brass band, was simply a revelation.

The music was played at its proper, marching pace; the old soldiers gave it their all, deafeningly and with enormous pride and emotion. Not surprising, given their connection to the lads in the WW1 trenches who sang it before going over the top and, in far too many cases, dying for their country, and their county. There were at least three encores later on, called for by the veterans themselves, and the song just lit up whole evening.

That experience soon put all those pitiful, speed-shouting Withdean renditions into their true perspective. We simply have to do so much better to rightfully reclaim our song by the time we get Falmer.

Thanks for that tale, GT. Makes me feel proper proud, despite not having lived in Sussex for 25 years now.

Crispies has been banned from withdean ? ? what on earth for ?

A steward was moaning at him.

He threw his coat at/towards the steward and walked out.

5 stewards followed him and he is now banned.

no chance of getting all the words song (and to be honest, unless literally everyone in the crowd did it, that WOULD be a bit naff) but getting the song slowed down so it sounds like it does at the cricket is a must.

Sounded great at both Lords outings

The lyrics for the Norman Wisdom version are:

We're the team from Brighton
Brighton by the sea
Eleven players and a crowd
that will roar them to victory
So shout you fans lets your roar
Clap your hands until the're sore
For we're going up to win the cup
Its Brighton now for sure.

Oh we're the team from Brighton
Hove by jove thats us
We're always fair
we never swear
but now its shit or bust
so shout you fans lets hear you roar
Clap your hands until there sore
for we're going up to win the cup
its Brighton now for sure.

I think they are correct.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
Just had a reply from Insider asking for an 800 word article which we can assume will be printed in probably the Huddersfield programme.
There's no hurry, and I haven't got time to do this in order to make the Millwall programme deadline anyway.
Right. Better get typing!

Anything you may wish to contribute to help, please post on this thread.
I will certainly be quoting what Gilliver's Travels has said above.

This could well be the start of a result on this slow singing thing.

As Roy Walker used to say "It's good, but it's not right",
These are the words first printed in the match program during the 1964/65 season.

We're the team from Sussex
Sussex by the sea
Eeee-leven players and a crowd
Who roar them to victory
So shout you fans and make them score
(Goal!)
Clap your hands until they're sore
Coz we're going up, and we'll win the cup
For Albion-by-the-Shore

We're the team from Brighton
Hove, by jove that's us
We're always fair, we never swear
But now it's hit or bust!!!
So shout you fans and make them score
(Goal!)
Clap your hands until they're sore
Coz we're going up, and we'll win the cup
For Albion-by-the-Shore

Copied from 'ALBION The first 100 years' by Paul Camillin & Stewart Weir

I was at the game when Norman Wisdom came out with a microphone at half time and stood on the centre spot and sang it for the first time.

Is it not possible to get a recording of something like this that can be played at the start of each half (West Ham stylee), to train everyone to sing at the right tempo?

Is my memory fading or does anyone else remember Sussex by the Sea being played by the band of the Metropolitan Police at Highbury on April 16 1983 with a constable singing the words in a solo. Older posters assistance please.

The version we play over the PA as the teams come out is at the original speed (it must be: it's one of the original proper brass band recordings) and therefore if everyone sings along to that we have GOSBTS at the correct speed..then if you want the original version all everyone has to do is remember to sing it like that- adrenalin is the biggest obstacle (and adrenalin is a good thing at football!)

The 'Chas n Dave' version (as Harty called it) that I stuck on the B side of our Falmer hit was at the speed we sing it at these days - ie the arrangement followed the terrace version, not the other way round...

I'd like to be able to play that version at the next 10 home games, it means we'd have won 10 in a row!

Personally I like speeded up

I contributed a piece for the SBTS centenary programme back in April 2007. Will PM you, JS.

Remember the last day of last season, the Stockport game (the glorious day we stayed in Division 3) and the club printed the lyrics to Sussex by the Sea on those clappy things? They were put on every seat at Withdean, they then played Sussex by the Sea as the team ran out, but people held the words in the air instead so couldnt sing out the words infront of them :jester:

... The bit we all sing, "Der, der der etc and we're going up and we'll win the cup, for Sussex by the sea.
Good old Sussex by the sea, good old..." etc.
.
Excellent work Mr Straw, as well as getting it back to it's proper speed we'll get it back to have WORDS THAT MAKE SENSE. ''Going up and we'll win the cup' is a statement of our intent (promotion and a cup triumph), 'Going up TO win the cup' merely refers to a physical journey in 1983 to London to win the FA Cup. It means f*** all now and I cannot believe so many dullards and cretins in our fanbase still sing it.

I think I may have mentioned this before.

.... Personally I like speeded up
Blimey, really? I think you're in a minority of one. As has been mentioned it's impossible to get the words out and we end up singing it as just one stream of words "ohwe'regoingupandwe'llwinthecup" - that's if we can get them out at all. It just sounds like a one-note howl.

I seem to remember "You can tell them all that we play football at Sussex by the sea. Good old Sussex by the sea etc." being sung. Did this happen or is it my imagination?
