Possibly. I guess the problem is that it took so long to make last night’s fight, then it was postponed for another 4 months due to Fury’s cut. Other contenders will then have to wait a further 9 months or so to get a crack at one of the belts. That’s well over a year, almost 2, with no one having the chance to fight for anything. Part of the reason for multiple belts is that there’s more opportunity.

And Fury is 36, not sure how many more fights he has in him. I think win or lose, his rematch with Usyk will be his last fight and I’ll be very surprised if there is anything inbetween.

Fury is 35 .... Usyk is 37 !!

You would think fury could go longer but I guess like Hatton because of all the damage he's done to his body he's finished now. Will be interesting to see if he will get in the ring again now, psychologically I don't give him much of a chance in the rematch.

Watched it again (sober) 6 rounds each, but the standing count makes it Usyk by a point, so my beergoogles verdict post midnight was incorrect

Don't think we will ever see AJ vs Fury now, and I’m even not sure in the cold light of day Fury will even fancy the rematch.

I hope Usyk retires now, as the undisputed king of this generation, he has nothing to prove. Tyson, Joshua and Wilder fight it out for second.

You say “drop down”. I have never been totally convinced by Fury’s greatness and see them more as equals. and a fight would go some way to determining their public ranking.

Of course, it’s fine margins - but AJ has lost three career bouts - including a softball in Ruiz - and Fury was unbeaten until last night, having seen off Wilder twice (plus a draw). AJ hasn’t fought Wilder to even establish his position as a challenger, which in my view he’d need to do to get a shot at Fury for number one contender.

Really I see it as Usyk/Fury for 1 and 2, and AJ/Wilder for 3 and 4 unless AJ/Wilder happens and AJ wins.

I don’t think Usyk has shown any indication of retiring - he’s portrayed as a bit of a beacon of light for many in Ukraine and a source of national pride as their champion.

I fear we saw the beginning of the loss of Fury’s punch resistance last night, like trust and virginity, you can only lose it once and never get it back.

Respect for Fury has gone after that pathetic comment around siding with Usyk due to the war. His corner wrongly made him think he was in charge before round 12.
Ngannou beat him too, but for fixed score cards. Pleased it went the right way this time.

To be fair to him, he’d just been battered, he also wished everyone happy new year, a few judgements being made on the utterances of someone straight after a brutal fight.

In the press conference afterward he was much more measured and likeable I thought.

I would not say he has ever had a solid chin. He had been knocked down 7 times in he's pro career before last night. Other than Wilder and Ngannou he has not really thought any opponents who can bang, as you say he will not want anything to do with Joshua. The look on Fury's face when Joshua KO Ngannou said it all.

I really doubt Fury would be ducking AJ. He's always been confident in winning that fight, as have his team. It's still a massive fight where they'd both make a huge amount of money, and despite what Fury says about just doing boxing for the enjoyment I do think he's mostly motivated by money.

Fury and AJ then go on to promote a huge fight.

Usyk retires, Fury retires after beating AJ.

And that’s essentially the end of this generations great heavyweights.

Was thinking this. Who do you fight if you’re AJ now for example? Wilder is probably the only fight he can take as a big occasion. Every other opponent he’d be accused of being underwhelming. Rumoured to be fighting the winner of Dubois and Hrgovic. He’s levels above both of them.

Personally I think that regardless if Fury loses again to Usyk they’re building it up to an AJ vs Fury fight and they’ll promote it as the loser gets sent into retirement in a ‘career ending loss’

If Fury had prepped for him the same way Joshua did it would have been an exhibition.

I think Fury would lean and bully AJ to a fairly boring points victory. I get the excitement around the tie, I actually think the fight wouldn’t be a classic in reality.
