I don't think he'd been charged with/been convicted of a crime. He was held in prison without charge, and also fined, which may have been due to his opposition to the government.

?No......what ever the issues with his convictions may be, they're still convictions aren't they. And failing to disclose them is a completely different matter to not agreeing with them!!!!
