I would have thought getting Google back, although you might manage it for a few months as before, is in the long term impossible.
As I understand it, no one on the user end knows exactly or even roughly the words that the police-bot is watching for. Over the last few years the modding and self policing has in my view reduced the language too about half what it was, say four years ago. So Google has already had a big influence on this site. The semi naked ladies have all but disappeared completely. ( Boo ) None of this, it appears is good enough for Google, and in exactly the same way as standing in stadiums is going, it is an attempt by a business to control the behavior of it's customers, not trusting them to do it themselves! To mold one set of people into the model that another group see as the right way, from their point of view.
Don't be having it, power to the people. To the barricades.

I go along with this ... if there's an alternative to Google then go for it. They are fast becoming a Pariah business particularly for those that have no clout.

Donations, NSC Merchandise, Local advertising, Getting B&HA to contribute (there's tons of feedback they have to find useful) are all things that could be "fairly" (with a bit of time) easily pursued I'd have thought

I'm sure Google would cope without NSC though, so I doubt they'd care what we do. That's why I feel we should get donations up and running asap - the more sources of income available the better, just in case any of them pull the plug in the future for whatever reason.

The only way to stop the tail wagging the dog, is a superscription forum.........But that way lies madness.
There is a Sailing forum, which has a Front Page which is where all the advertising is placed, along with a selection of news items and happenings of interest. These part versions lead into the forum part of the site where the is light moderating but no advertising.
Although an American site it caters to the mainly Americans, Australians UK and Ireland etc. Although it's been going about as long as little old NSC it has almost 4 mil posts and 5000+ active members, this is an international site in comparison.
It has a site owner, although larger and with less hair than Bozza, in essence it's very much as NSC used to be when it appeared to be cheaper to run, bit of swearing and partly naked ladies although not as much conflict between posters as they are not supporting a football team and have different views.
To sum up the Front Page is looked at by everybody and those that wish to delve a bit deeper, enter the Forum. It might be a model that would work for NSC.

The other iron in the fire is a 'friends of NSC' type part of the site where local firms can advertise their services along with any NSC user special deals they may offer. I floated this idea a while back and there was quite a warm reception. The firms I spoke to were interested at the mooted £150 per year fee for access to this. It would only take 40 or so companies to participate to cover annual costs. If/when we do offer this, we will be more strict on those who, somewhat cheekily, look to market commercial ventures to NSC's very nicely focused group of members

I think this is the way to go. With the amount of members/page impressions etc, local businesses should be falling over themselves to advertise on here. Particularly when you think of the number of threads of the "who knows a decent plumber/roofer/masseuse" type. You get to pick and choose as well.

is there not something already available to facilitate you effectivly running your own advertising? a tool to upload banner or simple word ads which you then set the frequency to appear according to how much paid? might be a it of admin overhead might must be a decent idea. if there isnt, does someone want to create this (must be a market for this shirley?)

Yes, there are ad servers available that will do this. It should not be difficult or labour intensive once the ad server is set up.
