I'm struggling slightly with this story.

Now, I've been fortunate in that I've not needed government help in the form of benefits and similar thus far and, as such, my knowledge of what is available and how you get it is pretty sketchy.

However, these people are, presumably, not getting anything they are not entitled to and, unlike the tired cliche of "spending all their benefits on booze, fags, big TVs and smartphones" they are living frugally, to some extent, in order that they can pursue a different lifestyle altogether.

If you want to blame anyone/any thing here, shouldn't it be the benefits system that permits what you see as abuse?

But then can't you use that same argument towards the big corporations that many have mentioned on this thread who use the system to avoid paying tax?

I agree with you by the way....just find it pretty distasteful to do it in such a public manner.

Has anyone stated that they pay tax yet or that they have a full time job?

I love these threads. It's our big chance to stand up and tell the world we do our bit.

I struggle to accept that I'm paying for this family's nature project all through my hard, back breaking, bone grinding professional attitude. There's something not right about how this family benefits from my inspiring, never say die attitude in relation to my approach to making money to survive. It hurts to know that my tax contributions are giving people an easy ride instead of funding a life saving brain operation for a young child in need. Something needs to be done otherwise all my hard, brave, fearless, wise, giving and loving work ethics are just being completely taken advantage of.

If you look at Corbyn’s attitude towards travellers and squatters, he wants to give them more rights ! So expect a lot more of this ruining your neighbourhood if you are daft enough to vote for a Marxist clown tomorrow.

Unbelievable. They’re getting away with it under a Tory government yet you still find a way to blame Corbyn. Madness.

What a load of old waffle. Corbyn has never been anywhere near in power and tomorrow he is toast. There is absolutely no chance of labour winning and to blame him for any current ills is just absolute nonsense, which surely you know. I hope we do enough to topple the liar as well tomorrow and take the long road to an end to the politics of hate.

But we’ll never be able to build a system that removes all possible manipulation, not without adversely hurting / hindering the people that truly need help. People that take advantage of the ambiguity are actively causing the politicians to make the sort of cuts that are wrecking lives. Benefits cheats are just as disgusting as corrupt 1%’ers

While I have no time for the dickheads in the article (and I agree with the sentiment), this is clearly not the case. Scumbags bagging a few quid in benefits that they shouldn't have cannot be compared to hundreds of billions of pounds being moved around the world to avoid tax.

The former might make a tiny dent in the annual deficit of the UK if completely eradicated. Removing the latter would change the entire World for the better. You can and should abhor both, but one is still MUCH worse than the other.

Re the article, does the bloke actually say he's "saving" benefits in order to move to a self sustainable house / way of life. The only actual quote I could see was that they are "using housing benefit" as a way to get to what they want to do. I.e. That's how they pay for life at present. As Mr Putdown said, you can't "save money" from housing benefit as they will only pay as much or (generally) less than the market value / full rent, so that's impossible.

Lazy, inaccurate journalism and more publicity for a pair of twats who clearly make a few quid every few years from selling their "story".......... and lots of people get angry.

Well done The Argus! :wanker:

So, are the Tories making it too hard or too easy for people to access benefits? I'm pretty sure you've said both now.

WTF are you on about. Unless I’m much mistaken Jeremy Corbyn isn’t in charge of government policy and spending at the moment...

Who's paying for the plot of land for this project of his?

A ploy of land big enough for a house in Brighton would be worth at least £150k. That's a lot to have saved from his "minimal" benefit cheques.
If this is public land then who has authorised this? Why is the land not being used for flats?
If the land is to remain public land then who will own his house?

I would love to build my own home but unfortunately I haven't got a big pot of money I've been given by the taxpayer to fund this little project of mine.

I don’t think it matters which party is in power. There’ll be those who lose out and those who fiddle the system or misuse the money. ‘twas ever thus.

I doubt they’ll get to the stage of buying land or building the house.

Well he's not blamed Corbyn for anything, he's simply saying what he thinks would happen if Corbyn were to win.

I want to vote Labour, but Corbyn is making me feel I just can't do it. Those who've given us Corbyn as the leader of Labour are partly to blame for the consequences.

I’m with you 100% at the individual level. One prick gaming the system isn’t really harming things. Even all of them added up is probably nothing compared to the tech giants paying £5 tax per year. But it’s the fact that the benefit cheat’s actions directly cause the twattish governments to react. It creates hardship on genuine people that desperately need help. Of course my ire should be (and is) directed at the politicians, but they’d leave it alone if they didn’t think it was worth big political points.

I know I’m simplifying it. I know the gov look at these things and think we need a reset every so often, but I find the whole thing so emotionally difficult.

They were 100% right to set a general rule that says ‘you shouldn’t be able to earn more on benefits than in work’. My old neighbours entire family were on benefits (three generations, living in the same house). The 20-year ole had never done a days official work because there was no point.
My ex was a recruiter for admin staff, and they really struggled to get secretary’s because the delta between benefits and a job was so small, it didn’t make any sense to get out of bed. Why work for 8 hours just for £3 extra per day!
