So what team would you have picked then?

Yes, Andrews didn't have a great game, but in reality the player whose place he took was Dale stephens.... who was cup-tied?!

Buckley and LuaLua are 1st team players anyway.

There were probably only 3 ACTUAL changes rather than 7. That is the Goalkeeper who has played every round so far and didn't put a foot wrong last night.
Chicksen and Dunk, who have also played every round so far and also had good games and hard to argue they were to blame for not winning the game.

The only person de-valuing the cup, is the person stamping their feet and crying that they won't go next time.

For me mate, it's about our defensive changes, the attacking ones I can live with but to change 4 of the back 5 was suicide.

Judging by some of the replies on here I guess I'd better hold up my hands and say I belong in the group being called 'idiots'.

How many supporting OG in the team he put out can say hand on heart that had this been a game that could have ensured promotion or been a final against Hull, OG would have selected the players he did tonight? I most certainly don't.

I've seen the question asked, "what's the point of having a squad if you don't use it?" - well I have a spare wheel in the car which will do a perfectly serviceable job but I hope I never have to use it.

We may not have won last night's game if we had fielded our strongest team, we'll never know, but we shouldn't be in the position of having to speculate.

I see where you're coming from, but the analogies are flawed: Firstly, the game wasn't a final or a promotion decider. It was a 5th round tie. Aside from PIG, there weren't too many 'weakened' areas. You could argue that Ward would be the only other one that would get in, but many others?

Also, you know with some confidence that a spare tyre will work fine when you put it on. A footballer isn't the same as a tyre.

Shittest thread in the history of NSC?

Buckley - not fit Best he's played this season IMHO
Chicksen - not good enough Exciting prospect, very nimble, did well given lack of game time.
JFC - was always going to lose the midfield battle Pretty sure we won the midfield battle for most of the game.
Brezovan - Distribution was poor No, it wasn't. It was (as usual) his key strength, better than Kuszcacks and beyter than Hull's keepers.
Andrews - terrible Yes, he had an off day, shit happens, is that Oscar's fault?
Dunk - solid but rather have greer Yes, he was solid.

in what way

The best form of attack is defence, we looked shakey....for those that didn't see that then watch the game again on a re-run, they clattered the bar and post twice and we should have lost, they controlled large parts of the game with 58% of the ball, no 1 has 58% of the ball against us and that's the biggest problem, it's well and good saying use the squad but if they cant do what the first team can do and it means we don't go through then it's not right.

I'm not fishing at all, i'm very dissapointed

A) Changing players isn't "experimenting". A New formation is experimenting.
B) Are Sunderland really that beatable? They've lost twice in 12 games. Say what you like about Gus, but he's doing well there.

Brighton - In your face
It's been said before and it's going to be said here again, lastnights team selection was a total piss take out of fans and the F.A cup and I for one am gutted, I totally concur with Robbie Savage. Enormous opportunity to get to the quarter final of the FA CUP for a winnable tie against our former manager and would have also given us another big pay day and he makes 7 ****ing changes!

I half understand it against the likes of Port Vale but not against Hull who ended up making less changes than we did.

I'm not sure who he thinks we are to make that many changes and I hope the FA in the future fix it so that clubs cant change more than 3 players from a Saturday game or you may aswell just call it the Reserve team cup & we can play the games at Lancing. The only thing I can think is that he doesn't understand the F.A cup, what it means to the fans and it's history, is it not the greatest cup comp in the world?

Buckley - not fit
Chicksen - not good enough

It's not all about how the players do on the night, a solid team that are used to playing together obviousyly play better than sticking a load of players for a one off game.

No more FA cup games for me whilst Oscar is in charge, if he cant be arsed to put a winning team out then neither can I.

I didn't read any further.

That's probably because you stated earlier in this thread that you "go to watch us win".

If that's your expectation of the Albion then you must have spent a great proportion of your lifetime being diSaPPointed.

Me, I've quite enjoyed watching some of the fringe players in cup games this season. Who's to say the first choice XI would have won anyway? They might let their standards drop on the basis that it's not their primary target for the season. Whereas the fringe players go all out as they have something to prove. The only ones I thought were sub par last night were Andrews & LuaLua, who aren't exactly the youngsters.

Nah, I think I'm happy to trust our experienced manager to do what's best for Brighton & Hove Albion FC on this one, not some bloke sitting behind a keyboard in an office who's had a season ticket for a few years.

I was very vocal before the game and the team selection that we really should put out our best team. However I am happy to say I was wrong. We played our second best keeper, centre half, left back and arguably right back, and very nearly got away with it.

We played the strongest attacking line up that I have seen for ages though and gave it a really good go.

Positives
- Brez really does look more confident than we have ever seen and a worthy number two who will keep PIG on his toes
- Dunk has a great game, some are blaming him for the goal, that is a little harsh, but he came through and looked very strong and accomplished on the ball
- Chicksen - solid and for a young lad showed some promising. However was probably weaker than Ward would have been
- Claderon - total commitment and looked the fittest player on the pitch at the end. Doubt Bruno would have done any better.

So did we lose anything from not playing the first choice players, probably not. I therefore think Oscar got the right balance and was unlucky not to progress through.

I can see where you're coming from, particularly as Poyet used to get slated for not taking the Cup seriously - and yet OG is much more willing to play a weakened side. As you say, it was a big game against Premier League opposition and a rare chance to reach the quarter finals, which we may now have blown.

There were too many changes, imo. I don't think Chicksen should have played really. JFC was also not really quite good enough. Andrews had a terrible game, but him and Buckley would probably have played anyway. I don't understand why Lua Lua was played in a central position, he just isn't effective in that role. Obika was abysmal when he came on - but we haven't really got any other striking options. Dunk, however, performed well (although I was worried when I saw his name on the team sheet!).

I agree with this, but they would probably be regarded as first choice picks anyway. Not sure who could have played instead of Andrews. I think Lua Lua struggles in the front formation. He needs to be hugging the line. Andrews is just not good enough to compete with a premiership midfield. Journeyman championship midfielder and nothing more.

Borderline close to a ban in my book.

Edna is indeed a lady, or a woman, but she often expresses football knowledge that you clearly can only dream of. I don't always agree with her, but she knows her football, and is therefore far more worthy of posting her opinions on here than you are currently.

Yes, it was a fifth round FA cup tie, only the third time in our whole history that we had progressed this far in our history! In my mind this puts it high in the league of important games we have played. It is the apparent acceptance that it is 'just' a cup game and not that important that I find disappointing.

I agree with you that a footballer is not the same as a spare tyre - even less reason to take the risk in such an important game.
