Life has a terrible habit of making you look forward, sometimes to such a degree you wish your life away. Holiday's, Christmas, key events in the future are all we think about, not the today and now. Weirdly at some point your perspective changes, i'm 50 now and there is an element of nostalgia and enjoying each day, my advice to the youngsters on NSC is try to achieve that feeling earlier than some of us oldies. :albion2:

Good point. I really do enjoy the here-and-now and rarely look forward more than a year or two. When I hit 40 I tried to figure out why this is and think I have a reason. It works for me though.

If you are over 50 post what ever you want on this thread as anyone which I guess is under 25 is very unlikely to even open the thread let alone pay any attention

Try to get the best education you can as otherwise you are doomed to be an Epsilon, look it up.
Try to avoid getting bad habits such as smoking, drinking to excess too regularly and avoid long term drug use as it WILL mess up the only body you will get, unless you are a Buddhist.
Never stay in a relationship because you feel you should or because you are afraid to risk upheaval or change ,find a partner who makes you laugh and can talk to about anything, if a relationship does not feel right early on, it won't get better with time.

It's 'would have' not 'would of'.

It's 'aitch' not 'haitch'.

Brighton Pier is actually The Palace Pier.

It is 'brought' not 'bought' (unless it involved the exchange of money for goods).

No sentence begins with 'Like'.

More importantly, you can never be sure you have made the right decision, but you need to learn quickly to recognise what will be a bad decision, and avoid it.

Indeed HT. We all talk a good game but have we lived our lives using these pearls of wisdom .. in most cases nope.

Let em get on making their own mistakes and hopefully learning from them.

True. I think that the younger generation need to write their own rules as ours aren't necessarily applicable.

My angle is slightly different in that we have ideas and supposed knowledge picked up and accumulated from a different era to the kids. I've noticed in my line of work that if you want some truly novel and smarter ways of working its sometimes best you go to the youngest person in the team.

Really? What's wrong with:

"Like it or not, Brighton are a good footballing side"

or

"Like the lady in the shop said, it's not your colour"

That's interesting. Since the mid 80s I have never made any plans, and have lived every day like it is my last. Circumstances made it hard to plan, initially, but now I just like the idea that anything is possible. My diary, of course, is full of commitments, partly my employment, and of course all the home games, but I never look more than a few days ahead, to ensure I am prepared. I never look forward to holidays (I have some skiing booked, but I have only a vague idea when). And, yes, I am interested in the past, and my connectoon with it. Could I draft this into advice for a youngster? Yes, but I wouldn't. My life is mine, and theirs is theirs. Staving off the effects of extreme pressure has played a part in my outlook, and probably the reason I don't look far forward or make plans. My outlook is relevant only to me.

On a related note, it is amazing how things have changed in the last 40 years, and I just hope I don't lose touch with the wider world like previous generations (of my family) did, stuck in the 50s in thought word and deed. I teach 18-25 year olds, and it always pleases me when I provide them with a small amount of amusement and entertainment, as well as a bit of inspiration in their chosen path. Perhaps the important thing, though, is to accept that many of them will see you as 'old' and 'a bit of a ****', and not attempt to prove them wrong. In that respect, I suspect I share something with BG :lolol:

Find your real friends when you're young and never let them down. That way, they'll be there for you when you need them.

Enjoy everything you do and don't put things off if the chance may not come again. Regrets are for what you know you should have done but didn't.

Don't get too hung up on career. There's nothing worse than your job getting in the way of enjoying yourself. If it does, bin it.

If at all possible, try very hard to avoid using the word "peng"

I'd suggest the advice is the opposite way around ie olds should avoid using the word.
