A gent maybe. An effective politician, er, no.

He was not a team player. He flounced out of cabinet after a year as a minister in the 90s, and became a back bench grumbler (i.e., losing all effectiveness).

For those bracketing him with Corbyn, they were not anywhere near the same page over antisemitism "In August 2018, Field resigned the Labour whip citing antisemitism in the party, as well as a "culture of intolerance, nastiness and intimidation" in parts of the party, including in his own constituency."

And rather like others who should know better "Field lost a confidence vote in his constituency party a month before his resignation, after siding with the government in Brexit votes".

Oh dear. A man who put his own opinions (sorry, principles) above the national interest. And if you are a member of a political party, the national interest is, by definition, becoming the government and governing. This requires being a team player. Running the country can't be done by whim and caprice, and to be effective you must make compromise with others in your team. That or leave and set up your own party.

Oh...." In 2019, he formed the Birkenhead Social Justice Party and stood unsuccessfully as its sole candidate in the 2019 election."



Nevertheless, RIP.

Well, well, well. And reading through his biog, it is quite a catalogue of misjudgment.

With Ros Altmann, the stand out experts on NIC and all things pensions in and around parliament, visionaries when everyone else kicked the can down the road. Got under Blair’s nose for being candid.

Hate to bust a bubble - Field was arrogant and anti-democratic - who repeatedly threatened to ignore democratic decisions of the local LP throughout most of his career.

His dismissive attitude of the democratic process and the people who voted for him is amply demonstrated here
