it doesnt matter what formation is used if the players are disinterested, bored and generally inept
It all doesn't matter what formation is used if the players in question all have their feet cut off.
However, you have to make the assumption is that their feet will still be in place, in much the same way much as making the assumption that they will not be disinterested and inept when talking about formations.
Personally I'm beginning to think consider altering the 4-4-2 system. If not for the beginning of the match, then certainly at half time if all is not well.

3 at the back when we have a shortage of available centrebacks would be crazy, especially given the qualities of our full backs. It's either 442 or 451.

As it looks like Defoe & Milner are to start, I guess we have 2 holding players allowing Gerard/Lampard to get forward. Slovenia will no doubt have 10 behind the ball.

That'll match nicely up aganst their "Goalie-10 Defenders" formation. A slightly lop-sided congested pen area at one end, David James asleep at the other.
