They were accusing someone of their acquaintance of being a "proper chaile".
I haven't heard anyone exclaim "Gordon Bennett!!" for a good few years.
Oh god, that phrase was a staple of the teachers in my school. I haven't thought of that for years. Thank you!

I remember when yoghurt pot lids used to be metallic and sometimes you'd bite them to open them up and my Dad would alsways say "Ooh, careful son, that'll find yer fillings" I always liked that one.
And of course, the scourge of many a bullied schoolboy:

I asked my girlfriend for a word/phrase she hadn't heard in years and she said "sorry". She doesn't get out much to be fair but I honestly thought that was quite a common word myself.
