I was 13 and doing a paper round when decimalisation came in.
In those days the paper boy/girl also collected the money at the end of the week, i remember it took me about 3 times longer to get round as no-one understood the new money, especially the old dears, had i of been the ruthless kind i could of made a fortune out of them, but never did as i was an honest child.

Honest ???

Thats the NDP - only partially EU funded, majority came from our exchequer. If the UK did a ten year structual plan under the same auspices, it'd be the same level of EU funding.

Mostly off our own work. The other countries that joined the EU poor - Greece and Portugal - are still poor. The ten new accession states are still poor

The EU like to tout Ireland as an example of what can happen when you join the EU. We're not. We're an example of what can happen when you have a good industrial development authority and a liberal taxation system, nothing more. We're a net contributor to the EU, and we don't get rebates (unlike the UK).

now that is just bollox...(see above)

Just because the UK's economy didn't grow to the same scale doesn't mean you can go and claim it was the EU that assisted it. It wasn't. They've managed to brainwash lots of people into thinking it was in the hope it'll keep them in favour in an increasingly euroskeptic country - remember we rejected the last EU treaty first time around in a non-consultative referendum requiring a modification before it'd get passed.

The EU has done f*** all for this country that they didn't do for every other country thats in it. The UK has had the same 32 years of membership benefits as well as a budget contribution rebate for a lot of them.

Computer geek who's brother is a managment accountant who lives in a country where the media bombard us with Brussells propaganda 24/7 if they can.

Come on, prove that the EU (and its predeccesors) helped the economy here any more than it did for the UK, Denmark, Greece, Spain or Portugal - the pre-1995 "new members". You won't be able to.

The biggest driving force in Irish economic development was the Whitaker plan, which was drawn up by a middle-aged Anglo-Irish civil servant almost ten years before we joined the EEC. The only "EU" benefits we've got are those that are open to all EEA members, not just EU members.

I notice you've come down to the level of insults rather than trying to back up unsubstantiated claims wrt the EU. Funnily enough, eurocentric politicians usually have to resort to the very same

the only obvious thing about Ireland is that its been so laid back and slow for decades its about time they actually got on with something other than being a holiday destination and retirement zone for artistes ( mostly piss artistes) so its not difficult to make itself look industrious, and I think the EU and governemet has relatively recently made the prospect of inward investment more attractive, hence the action and developement in recent years.

Stereotype alert! Just because the UK education system spent 200 years trying to mark the country as lazy and stupid doesn't mean it was in the slightest bit true.

Major inward investement started in the late 1960's due to the foundation of the IDA, and it actually -slowed- due to worries about the EEC's controls (particularly scared off US based countries). The oil crisis didn't help it resuming any time after that, and by the mid 1980's, our infrastructure was still 1960's due to no money to invest.

only a complete knob would bother arguing that Oirland hasnt done well out of the EU :nono:

Only someone who knows nothing beyond Brussels propaganda would bother arguing that they've benefited any more than any other EU member state.

Yes, there are benefits to being in the EU. But every single member state has those benefits. Ireland has benefited no more or less than any other country that entered in a similar economic state, yet its the only one thats not still poor - Greece and Portugal are both still well down there. Any differences between them and us come from things completely unrelated to the behemoth that is the EU.

what utter bollocks, are you employed by the Irish board of trade and industry ?

some of my family are Irish, and I have a good few freinds and have spent quite a bit of time there over the years, theres no doubt about it, its a laid back place that runs at a slower place than South East England. its got f*** all to do with laziness and stupidity.
