For the first time in my life, I think I will vote Labour

Intersting theory - looks like just about every major economy on the planet were also being run by similarly talentless morons who also failed to see what was coming and should also be kicked out.

Alternatively perhaps it was an unprecedented set of events that the planet was not ready for and did well to survive at all. I seem to remember Brown taking fairly proactive measures compared to some countries and whilst he has made mistakes I would suggest we are better off than we could have been.

I remember only too well the years under the Tories with inflation over 15% which was a nightmare with raging unemployment and little sympathy from the Government who were very much for people looking after themselves and if they couldn't - tough!

Aren't or were we not one of the last major economies to come out of recession (awaits to be proved wrong)? That to me would mean that what the Government implemented wasn't that great and we could have been in lot better position

Are you saying inflation rose during the years after the tories took over in 1979, or would you agree it was around 13.5 % in 79, rose to 18% in 80 and declined pretty steadily after that? just after a bit of clarification thats all, as your post implies that the tories presided over an era of rampant inflation.

why is that people recall or remark on the inflation (or interest) rates under "the tories" but conveniently forget same rates under the Labour governments of the 70's. 25% under Wilson. and the 80% super tax.

Labour handled the crisis the same way as any government would have, by shitting themselves and doing whatever the economics experts told them to. meanwhile they shafted Lloyds. and unlike the other talentless morons in other countries (which is fair observation), they had already been spending beyond their means so have had no room to move.

Having met MPs from the three main political parties I can safely say I'll never vote Tory. In times like these it is so much easier to be in opposition and try to exploit the situation.

I do have a fairly good understanding of economic, further, if you look at the economic downturn that other Countries have endured, you can see that, relatively, we're doing better than most. Also, look up how the Tories managed in the last recession; not well.

Now is the time for stability, things are slowly improving under Labour and the Conservatives do not provide a proven alternative.

You sound very much like the sort of labour party apparatchik who is employed to come on sites like this to disseminate party propaganda.

To be fair to Labour, we're more reliant than most on financial services as a major contributor to our economy and with the banking crisis that sector's been hit harder than most.

It would have been just the same under the Tories, the same 'cosy' relationship with the City, the USA, . It makes me angry how Labour ridiculed Vince Cable's statement he made in the House warning of financial meltdown months before it happened.

He also sounds like one of the millions of people who simply don't trust George Osborn as chancellor for the simple reason that his cunning plan to dig us out of a large borrowing deficit is to simply not spend anything, regardless of who needs it, or what prosperity any potential investment might otherwise bring.

I know you trust him, but millions don't.

I also think we were later going into recession.

I agree mistakes were made but to suggest what was implemented wasn't that great and we could be in a lot better position is interesting. What should have been done better and how would it have resulted in a lot better position?

Happy to clarify - I was trying to compare with the last Tory Government in the 90's and it was rampant inflation.

Wilson and that Government wouldn't get my vote.

I don't agree they shafted Lloyds - Lloyds take most of the responsibility themselves - I should know as I am a very unhappy shareholder and think the Board made a major blunder.

Yes spending is beyond what it should be but will hopefully be brought under control without swinging cuts affecting health and education.

Brilliant, so I have a point of view that isn't your own and now I'm dishing out propganda. I suppose I should just jump on the mob rule train and blame Labour for everything that's going wrong. Members of my family vote Conservative but I won't.

For what it's worth I'm not a member of any political party, especially not Labour. Further, I don't like the idea of publishing the way I'm going to vote on NSC, I've just expressed an opinion about the Conservatives.

Am I a 'sort of labour party apparatchik who is employed to come on sites like this to disseminate party propaganda' or just a Brighton fan with an opinion? Probably the latter.

No, just the wording and writing style of your post , not your point of view

cor that is a bloody big hole you have opened up there, think people who work in it might disagree. Wasted lots of money yes, improved well...

On the contrary, most, if not all, of the people I know that work in the NHS readily admit it is far better now than it was prior to 1997. Yes, there is wasted money and it could be a lot better but in their view, it was definitely a lot worse.

As for some of these comments about when we went into recession and when we went out this are completely irrelevant. What is important is how the recession affected the economy, ie how does our unemployment compare with other economies, how mucy did GDP reduce compared to others etc.

No, you were right the first time - every major economy on the planet was also being run by similarly talentless morons. Its just that ours was special - he was the most talentless and the biggest moron.

It was really simple stuff. Personal debt in the UK rose from a quarter of a trillion to 1.5 trillion pounds between 2000 and 2007. All this un-earned cash (generated mainly from people selling their houses to each other at ever increasing prices - and borrowed from the banks) funded 10% of the entire economy. Gordon (and most of the British public) thought this ever-increasing debt cycle could go on forever.

There was minority (branded doomsters and moaning minnies by the press), including Vince Cable, who pointed out that the debt cycle was unsustainable and would go bang. It went bang in 2007. Gordon Bown should be publicly flogged for his incompetence, let alone voted in again.

When I run out of money I stop spending not start borrowing. Expert after expert recommends you spend what you can afford - there is no reason the government shouldn't do the same. Let's remember Labour decided to save nothing for a rainy day, now it's come back to bite them !

we know what happened, the interesting question is why. You say brown should have stopped the problem earlier, but my question is how? In a free market economy, how do you stop a bank giving someone a mortgage?

When cable said what i said, of course brown knew he was right. He couldn't admit it because that kind of global realisation is the tipping point that brings the whole house of cards down. It happened anyway of course, but brown must have been hoping he could avert it, a hope that proved futile. His efforts since then to limit its effects and restore the economy have been hailed by the rest of the world, and as others have pointed out, our economy is recovering whilst greece and portugal burn and bring others down with them. Brown must be one of the most economically savvy prime ministers we've had. The alternative is osbourne.

Having said that i'm voting lib dem for environmental reasons amongst others. But my constituency allows that. No way do i want tories back
