The Catalans would have cost this gambler a small fortune but he wisely took his money and ran before kick-off at the Anoeta Stadium

An anonymous Betfair punter made £53,000 from his 22-leg longshot on Saturday, before Barcelona would have cost him a small fortune.

The bet would have made the gambler a cool £1.5million from a £49.50 stake had he let it run and all 22 legs had won.

It included QPR to beat Charlton, with Rangers taking victory thanks to a 94th minute winner, and Manchester City to beat West Brom, with the Blues coming from a goal down to take three points at the Etihad.

Michael Bowers, Football Trader at Betfair, said: “This is the mother of all cash outs with the customer correctly predicting that Barcelona weren’t going to do the business against Real Sociedad.

"The UK customer in his late twenties took a cash out value of £53,000 15 minutes before kick-off at the Anoeta Stadium and would have been elated to see Barcelona failing to find the net.

“This punter’s nerve would have already been put to the test after the 15th leg of his 22 fold accumulator as he watched Man City go 1-0 down against West Brom.

"Having refused a cash out of £25,000 ahead of the late kick off in the Premier League he would have been incredibly relieved to see Pellegrini’s men manage to pull it back in the second half.”

Had Barcelona won last night, the bet would have still been dependent on Tottenham beating Manchester United and Liverpool beating Stoke this afternoon.

It would have then rolled on to Tuesday night where the punter would have needed Real Madrid to beat Wolfsburfg.

Finally, United and Spurs would have each needed victories against Aston Villa and Stoke next weekend respectively to finish it off.

Fair play to him. That's an awful lot of money. It's still lunacy though. A 22 leg accumulator? For £50 quid??? I can't even get 6 on the Super6! Good call to cash out though considering it wouldn't have ended until weds.

Total mug punter

Quite. Impossible to have any kind of respect for a mug who does a 22-leg bet, whether they win or lose. Hard enough to have any sympathy for the mates who show you their losing 10-leg or 12-leg bets at the Amex every damn game. They only show you the slip when they've lost out by a single result, and seem oblivious to the bleeding obvious of doing a perm. Oh well .

I wonder if a 'Jim' fixed it for him...
