Sir Bobby Robson has to be the winner in any poll on this I'd say. Lovely proper football man who achieved great success in the game whilst conducted himself with dignity right to the very end.

For a name not already included here - Jason Roberts came across as a top bloke when I heard him on 606 earlier this evening.

That would be the Bobby Robson who when he left the England job was castigated by the media. According to Hugh McIlvanney of The TimesOne newspaper, in an editorial comment, condemned him as a liar, a cheat and a traitor, and added: “In previous centuries, a man who committed such treachery would have been sent to the Tower.”

The would be the Bobby Robson who described being accosted at a Millwall v Ipswich game by a man who yelled at him "I hope you and all your family get cancer and die"

Personally, I think he was a great manager and human being but let's not kid ourselves that he was universally liked.

I can't imagine that there are many footballing people who are universally liked, however. Even Gianfranco Zola who seems a nice a fella as it's possible to be in football seems to be disliked by his own co-owner.

Ryan Giggs must be the closest I reckon, I've scarcely heard anyone slag him off - but I'm sure there are some people who do.
