Football League Rivals Closer Than BHA to Crawley

With Crawley likely to join the football league next season the Albion will have a rival fairly close to Brighton. From being a club with a football league rival more than 40 miles a way at present (one of the furthest out of the 92), it has got me thinking.

The distance between Brighton & Crawley is only 22 miles.

So which clubs have a league club nearer than 22 miles?

What a stupid question. There can't be that many clubs with a league club further away than 22 miles FFS.

Discounting the list of obvious area-sharing answers presumably? (Liverpool/Everton, United/City/Bury, County/Forest, Wednesday/United, Vale/Stoke, London clubs, etc)

Actually, I'd think 22 miles is still far enough.

I would suggest that all the Devon clubs qualify (ok perhaps Torquay - Exeter is just under) and also the East Anglian ones. Oxford and Swindon also spring to mind, possibly Gilllingham as well. Might check out later if I find the time.

I cant see Crawley being a league club for too long. There is no way they will be bale to sustain their expenditure on the crowds they get. In fact I predict it will all end in tears.

If they can build a fan base quickly, you never know - they could be a side that bounces between leagues one and two a bit like Wycombe Wanderers. It was good to see they finally managed a half decent gate on Saturday - 3,300 I believe.

However, I heard from an AFC Wimbledon fan friend of mine that their owners have a vision of averaging 15,000 and being a Championship club. There's no way I can ever see that happening.

Wigan were a club Crawley's size not too many years ago. A rich backer bankrolled them into the Premier league - could happen again?

Crawley has a population of circa 100k, I'm sure there must be plenty of football league clubs in less populous towns. Although I can't see them ever sustaining a position above the fourth tier so unlikely to ever become a serious rival. Is the broadfield stadium closer to Selhurst than the Amex anyway?

With a small pebble I suggest you could hit Tannadice (with a big enough throw) from Dens Park. I give you Dundee and Dundee United - surely the closet 'rivalry' in the UK!

This is true. Wigan used to get crowds of 1,500 in the Fourth Division, not unlike Crawley now.

Huddersfield and Bradford are about 7 miles away from each other I think
