It does make me laugh a bit, as red meat contains zinc, iron, protein & B vitamins. The major risks if you eat TOO much are bowl cancer, alzheimers, osteoporosis & other bone conditions, arthritis, high cholesterol &, for women, higher risk of breast cancer.

Very true, but there are risks with every dietary choice. Vegans living on a diet high in pulses, fibre and vegetables risk producing far more arse gas than those with a balanced diet and as a result can end up with no friends other than fellow vegans or those with no sense of smell!

I think that's my favourite so far, but it's worth scanning the comments on there, they're far more interesting than the article itself.

Well played sir, you had the subs desk in stitches, particularly your last line.

Sadly, it's not mine. We can thank Messrs Galton and Simpson for that gem.

But the reaction from the fans is exactly what I expected it to be. I'm amazed at the people who feel the need to eat at football - are there really people who are not only incapable of not eating for three hours but who must eat meat when they do. It's very sad.

I wonder if the money they get from catering sales will be affected ? Frankly any ground I've been to nothing would get me to eat a burger there but I am no vegitarian. I think if I was a Forest Green fan I'd be a bit pissed off though, why does their chairman feel he can dictate to people what they should and shouldn't eat ?

Don't all clubs do this though? You try finding veggie food at the average league ground - isn't that dictating what you should and shouldn't eat too?

I almost never eat at a football ground purely because the quality is so universally poor but I couldn't survive a game without a beverage.

I really don't care what franchises the club allows or doesn't allow but must admit if I can't get a black coffee I am a bit miffed at having to make do with axle grease (Bovril) so I guess I'm a bit hypoctitical.

Has anyone had a football ground burger that looks like the picture alongside the BBC article?

Yes, the catering side of the club was one of the areas that was doing fairly well, despite the recession and economic down-turn. The club bar sold cottage pie which was very well received and got plenty of positive comment from visiting fans, there was also a carvery available on match-days which also had rave reviews...however, at the last home game the only meat on offer was turkey or salmon, which did make people wonder what was going on...this now confirms it.

The next home game, against Darlo, will be interesting...I can see a lot of media attention, far more than normal, if this hasn't died down by then. My worry is that the club becomes a laughing stock...well, it won't be beef of lamb stock!

I don't quite get that, sure they sell veggie burgers but you have a choice between that or a meat version, that's giving you a choice not forcing anybody one way or another. The Forest Green Chairman is worried about his supporters health but in fairness to him his club probably needs every fan it can get so coronary thrombosis is not good for attendances.

:lolol::lolol: I can see the chairman's point of view as his vegan ethic is obvioulsy something he believes in. However not everybody wants to be a veggie do they ? I would have thought if it's going to have a negative effect on revenue then maybe it's not a very good idea.

True, but surely it is important to offer a choice and then leave it up to the individual what they eat...last year there was a player at the club who had a well publicised issue with alcoholism...I didn't see the board rushing to close the pub and bars at the ground, just in case temptation were put in his way. This smacks of double standards and strikes me as somewhat authoritarian.

True, I rarely eat red meat and never drink alcohol...but the last thing I am going to do is criticise those who do either.

Imagine the stink if you had a Chairman with devoutly religious views who decided that the crowd should join him in prayer before every home game...I don't think it would wash!

People round these parts are pretty friendly and easy-going, but I seriously think Mr Vince has underestimated the reaction that this decision is likely to generate...unless of course that was his aim in the first place.

Totally agree, seems to me to possibly be the thin end of what could be a sizeable wedge. What next ? No games on Sunday as the fans should be at church ? Granted most clubs have a smoking ban which I do understand as smoking affects more than just the person smoking. However is the chirman's decision based on his concern for the health of his club's fans or because he believes that Meat is Murder ?

But clubs don't sell veggie burgers - that's the point. Where at Withdean can you find such a thing? I don't agree with the FG chairman's stance, I think it's best to provide a choice but I don't see the difference between this guy only offering veggie and Brighton only offering meat.
