We're situated in the West Stand Upper, North End, and we were asked to take our flag down by a Senior Steward, at the beginning of last season, as we hadn't supplied a fire safety certificate. We were also bemused at this, as we'd been displaying large flags up there since we started playing at the Amex.

We then acquired afterwards why fans in other parts of the ground hadn't been asked to take their banners and flags down, and we were told that they had already produced Fire Safety Certificates to the club... reading this today, this clearly is untrue!!!

We managed to arrange certificates to be sent to the club by the next game, so I am now legal to display!

Even the steward who stands next to our flag thought it was OTT!

I like to imagine his job is just to watch said flag for signs of fire. FLAG-MAN

So what is your own opinion? Or are you just going to post links to assorted articles from around the world? How does a flag of one dimension differ from another, why do you believe Brighton fans are more likely to set their flags alight from others? Please join in the debate in hand...

Was simply replying to your question asking, "How many flags do you know that have been set alight by 'Drunk idiots' at football grounds over the last few years?".

Whenever the requirement for fire safety certificates for flags is raised someone will invariably ask what danger flags pose in a concrete stadium - the real danger, (IMO), is not to the structure but to the crowd. Can you imagine the injuries that could be caused if a nylon flag being passed over the heads of the crowd were set alight or a wall of flags above the crowd similarly flared up.

The requirement for a certificate showing that flags over one square metre have been treated seems perfectly reasonable - a pain for those who already have flags that may well have been treated with fire retardant but have no certificate but most new flags won't be affected as these come with certificates.

Got ours treated by Barmy Flags in Oldham as part of stitching a design onto an 18x9 flag I already owned.

You get a certificate with it proving it's been treated. Company said its standard practice now.

Design attached. Should be ready in couple weeks.

I can't do attachments (nor see yours) but Barmy Flags have made our Connor5 PTFC flag (15'x10) it's quality, £172 but you know where your money's gone, I recommend them

how do the club know that the certificate you have is for the flag you bring to the ground ?

Eg. Can you 'borrow' somebody else's certificate and say it's for the flag you are in possession of ?

Dunno, but the one we've bought comes as an attached label with all the details, the guy at BF knows his stuff, when we discussed it he said 3 clubs have a reputation for being OTT, Wednesday MK Dongs and us!

Is your scarf over a metre square?

Some of our larger supporters must have shirts, jackets and jumpers over 1 square meter????

Ours was £230 but all hand stitched with ties and fire retardant. They were busy as flip pre World Cup (for obvious reasons) but I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. If the fire certificate is part of the flag construction (just seen your earlier post) that's very handy. Charlie at BF has been really helpful and sounds a top bloke. Even doing a repair to a small tear and quoting the same labor charge for stitching letters on a new flag panel by panel (where as ours is pre made, massive, and a pain to move round the machines for letter and logo application).

Pic of flag design on our blog if you fancy a look.

Did the Fire Brigade give you a fire certificate?
How much did they charge for this service?

Didn't charge at all and certificate not needed as I have taken it to Fire Station and club seem happy with it being sprayed

FA ground regulations state that all flags 1metre square should have a fire certificate sewn to one of the corners.
