I doubt there are any bookmakers around that dont make a profit from the punters.

Reading this thread am horrified that customers can use there debit cards in shops. How long has this been. Is this the same in casinos. In my youth visited casino/Betting shop. Once i lost what i went in with that was it. Def no card facility available. If they are concerned about gambling problems why dont they go back down route of cash only. Am am so surprised with this. Also never understand why there is no tax payable on gambling wins

There's no need to do that. The laws of probability do it all for you - in just the same way that the existence of the green zero on the roulette table achieves a profit for the house.

Exactly right. What they do have to provide is the "expected value", which tends to be between 94 and 96% depending on the game you're playing. Then it is left to the laws of probability and the distribution bell curve to dictate that the punter can't win in the long run (except, as matched betters will know, on a few exceptional short term offers).

Yeah, I think I just got confused by the warning signs.

Maybe the Coates family will explain ? Don't hold your breath. Coates aka Stoke City.

You mean BET365...

As for FOBT as long as you go into it with eyes open, know that whatever game you’re playing is already a fixed outcome before you hit the button and are prepared to risk only what you can afford to lose then no problem.

But there’s the rub, in the main people using them are chasing a quick win and genuinely believe that if the machine lands on red 2 that black 17 must be next because they’ve worked it out - and you can’t do that.

When I’ve dabbled its only ever been the fruit machine elements because I like finding out the features and obviously winning helps to but I do it with eyes open, knowledgable that it will screw me and I can’t game the system.

Thats where its wrong . you should not be allowed to get credit to then gamble . I believe (and i may be wrong) but in Vegas you cannot withdraw cash to bet on a credit card ) .
It should be regualted so that no credit is available . If you want to spunk your money from your debit card so be it .

Actually you could not be more wrong. In Vegas if the daily withdrawl limit on your credit card at an ATM isn't a sufficient loss, you can go to the cage and take any amount of avaialble credit, be it £1000, £10,000 or £50,000 without even needing a PIN. You need a photo ID and will pay about 5% for the privilidge. This facility is widely advertised by the cashier and at all ATM's in casinos in Vegas.

Our situation is far from perfect but at least here you are restricted a debit card transactions.

I can see no rational justification for allowing these things to exist at all in a civilised society. They exist for the sole purpose of extracting money from people who are vulnerable or who have an uncontrollable addiction. The gambling companies make vast amounts of money out of their victims misery. Its not a valid argument to say that people should individually take responsibility for their actions. All those who are able to do that, do do that. Just because people exist who are unable to be responsible, doesn't make it ok for an organisation to take all their money. Its just wrong.

I think you should be allowed to gamble unlimited amounts on these machines. Nobody 'extracts' money from the 'vulnerable' these people aren't 'victims'. Individuals should take some personal responsibility for their actions and not look to blame others. It's the same with fast food restaurants, nobody makes you go in them, it's ya own fault if you end up obese its not the fault of Mcs or BK.

Neither. Adults who can't control their gambling only have themselves to blame not the betting companies. The gambling companies are simply providing a service, nobody makes you have a bet. As an adult you are making a choice to gamble, if you bet more than you can afford blame ya self and not the betting company. If you are too weak you are not a 'victim' but the architect of ya own downfall.

Your point is well made, but its still not acceptable to prey on the weak as a way to make a living. They are doing more than providing a service here. These machines are not for the average person to enjoy as a leisure activity - they have designed them specifically to extract money from people with a certain weakness, and that is unacceptable.

Ludicrous logic and transparently uncaring. Presumably you are against all regulations that limit potentially harmful activity?

They are not extracting money from anyone, you have a choice as to whether you play on them.
