I somehow found myself alone on a Saturday night in the notoriously dull city of Salt Lake UT last night. I did manage to find a "soccer" match being played against Chicago and after a little research, I donned my stripes and headed to the game. Not sure if anyone of this board would give a stuff, but here goes anyway.
Rio Tinto Stadium - 30 by tram ($2 each way). Built in 2005 and I would estimate 22,000 capacity. In a sense, kind of Falmer ish looking without the roof on both ends. Easy to get to and from.
Flash tickets - Now this is a good idea. You sign up online and buy the ticket in advance with a credit card. When you go to the stadium, there are machines that print out the ticket after you swipe your card!!!!! Couldn't be easier.
Food - about 30 cafe style places throughout the stadium. You name it, they're serving it.
Beer - Poor first half, as I only saw Budweiser but second half picked up when I discovered a local Utah Hefeweisen.
Fans - Loads of kids, parents. Very tame as you might imagine, no away fans (35 hour drive each way) and no sense of ANY naughtiness at all. They do this silly..."Whoaaaahhh, you suck thing" to the opposing GK taking a goal kick...a cringed a little. Att. 17,200 (ish)
Ultras - About 100 mainly hispanic flag waving, drum beating, nonstop singing blokes behind one goal. Big smoke machine going at times. All very plastic really and while interesting for 10 minutes, by 90 it got on my tits.
Game - League One quality really. No outstanding players and generally bereft of skill. Finished 1-1, so not a complete write off.
Misc - Loads of fit looking ladies and I mean lots.
Overall - With no interesting alternatives, I'm glad I went to kill 2.5 hours. Cheap ($19 a ticket) and ($4) for roundtrip journey. It lived up to my expectations, average game, lovely stadium and most definitely "soccer". If you're ever (not sure why) in town, check it out.
